Spring Fling Weekend

Scheduled to be honored as the first recipients of the service awards are A. Davis Ford of Conroe, William P. Hall of Houston, E. Don Walker, Jr., of San Antonio, and Janie Spencer Joyce, Jane Clements Monday, Toby Gates, and Guinn Hugh Murray of Huntsville.

The awards will be presented at a Friday luncheon scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Lowman Student Center. Call (409) 294-1841 for information and reservations.

Folk Festival events include School Day on Friday and public admission from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $5 for adults, $1 for children ages 5-12, and free to children under 5. Call (409) 294-1831 for information.

Other events include the SHSU Department of Theatre and Dance production of "Damn Yankees" at 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, with a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee. Tickets are $10, or $7 with SHSU or senior citizen identification. For ticket information and reservations call (409) 294-1339.

The Bearkat football dinner and auction is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday at the Walker County Fairgrounds, with the Orange and White spring practice football game scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Bowers Stadium. Call (409) 294-1735 for information.

Other sports events scheduled for the weekend include the Bearkat baseball three-game series against Southeastern Louisiana at noon Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday at Holleman Field.

The LadyKat Tennis team will host the Southland Conference Tennis Tournament all day Friday through Sunday at the McAdams Tennis Center.

College of Business To Host Top Executive

Simpson will speak in the Smith-Hutson Business Building's Ron Mafrige Auditorium at 9:30 a.m. and will visit classes following his formal presentation.

Simpson graduated from New Mexico Military Institute, received a bachelor's degree from Rice University and master in business administration degree, majoring in banking and finance, from the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce at the University of Pennsylvania. He has also done post graduate study at the University of Texas in Austin.

Simpson's company is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and is a Fortune 500 company. Its subsidiaries include Republic Gypsum Company, Republic Paperboard Company, Halltown Paperboard Company and Republic Recycling Company.

R. Dean Lewis, dean of the College of Business Administration, said that Sam Houston State University is fortunate to have a speaker of Simpson's caliber. He credited Jim Bexley, holder of the Smith-Hutson Chair of Banking, for arranging the visit.

SHSU To Host Academic Challenge

The winning school will receive a trophy, an AppleMate 300 portable computer from Apple Computer, Inc., and the right to represent Texas at the Panasonic National Academic Challenge at Disney World in Florida in June.

"This is a very high quality competition," said Frank Fair, the competition coordinator. "Last year Klein High School won our state championship and then went on to win the national championship."

Matches will be held in the Lowman Student Center, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and are open to spectators. In each individual match, teams of four students from two high schools compete by answering questions in a "College Bowl" style contest, with winners advancing to the next round.

Schools which have entered include Bellaire, Cistercian Preparatory (Irving), Clear Lake, Denison, Edinburg North, Elkins (Missouri City), Fort Worth Country Day, Gatesville, Huntsville, Klein, Klein Forest, Lamar (Houston), Langham Creek, Lubbock, Memorial (Houston), Plano East, S & S High School (Sadler), St. John's (Houston), Stratford (Houston), Temple, Weatherford, Westfield and Ysleta.

Criminal Justice Schedules Events

The April 30 events will include a leadership luncheon, sundial ceremony, Beto Chair lecture, and honors convocation.

The Beto Chair lecture for that day will feature David Bayley, distinguished professor and dean of the school of criminal justice at the State University of New York-Albany.

Bayley will speak on "The Worldwide Frontier of Policing" at 2 p.m. in the Kerper Courtroom of the Beto Criminal Justice Center.

Also scheduled as a Beto Chair lecturer is Henry Lee, one of the world's best known experts in forensic science, who will give two lectures on Tuesday, April 21, in the Beto Criminal Justice Center Killinger Auditorium.

Lee will speak on "DNA in Criminal Investigation" at 9:30 a.m. and "Advances in Forensics" at 1:30 p.m.

Buyer's Group Has Good Year

The group paid $1,800 for a steer shown by Britt Walters, son of Roger Walters (Agriculture); $1,200 for rabbits shown by Mary Maiorano, daughter of Ana Maiorana (Health Center); and $799 for a lamb shown by Jamie Batten (Payroll).

Also, $450 each for rabbits shown by Rachel Lane, daughter of Bobby Lane (Agriculture), pig shown by Lacey Smith, daughter of Robert Smith (Physical Plant), and pig shown by Kim Taylor, granddaughter of Ruby Miller (Business Office); and $400 for chickens shown by Krystal Pierce, niece of both Anne Heartfield (Business Office) and Richard Bilnoske (Physical Plant).

Funds for the Buyer's Group purchases came from donations by SHSU faculty and staff.
