Honor Group Award

Texas Omicron, the Sam Houston State University chapter of the Alpha Chi National Honor Scholarship Society, has been named the outstanding chapter in the national organization's Region II, which includes East Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana.

The award was presented at a recent regional convention in Tyler, and accepted by student members Kristi Schober, Tannie Shannon, Alisse Wobser, Angie Oliverson and Patrik Lindkvist.

Patricia Williams, who serves as national vice president of the organization, is the SHSU chapter sponsor. The chapter will be competing at the Alpha Chi national convention against eight other chapters for the President's Cup, presented to the outstanding chapter in the nation.

Wobser won honorable mention in the Region II Gaston Scholarship competition with a performance of "O luce di quest' anima" from Gaetano Donizetti's opera "Linda di Chamounix." Lindkvist is the chapter's nominee for the Nolle National Scholarship, to be awarded in late April.

Writing Workshop

David Owens, former professor of English at Friends University in Wichita, Kan., will present a program at 2 p.m. Wednesday on "Collaborative Learning and Technology: Using CommonSpace Computer Software."

Classes in which he used such techniques included computer-assisted and traditional composition, creative writing, literary criticism, history of the English language, and American and world literature. Exit-exam and student evaluation data indicate that the courses were highly successful.

Owens' presentation will be held in the Newton Gresham Library Multimedia Lab (Room 200), and is limited to the first l27 faculty members who make reservations to attend.

For information or to register, contact Patricia Williams, coordinator of the Across-the-University Writing Program, by Monday.
