Lee to Speak

Lee, who was born in China, has assisted law enforcement agencies and investigated over 6,000 major cases around the world. He has received several hundred awards internationally for his work.

He has authored or co-authored 18 books, major chapters and reports, and had published approximately 200 articles in professional journals. He has served on national and international committees in forensic science, criminal justice, education and training and has conducted and instructed more than 800 workshops/seminars.

In his two presentations at SHSU Lee will discuss "DNA in Criminal Investigation" at 9:30 a.m. and "Advances in Forensics" at 1:30 p.m., both in the Beto Criminal Justice Center Killinger Auditorium.

Honor Group Award

The award was presented at a recent regional convention in Tyler, and accepted by student members Kristi Schober, Tannie Shannon, Alisse Wobser, Angie Oliverson and Patrik Lindkvist.

Patricia Williams, who serves as national vice president of the organization, is the SHSU chapter sponsor. The chapter will be competing at the Alpha Chi national convention against eight other chapters for the President's Cup, presented to the outstanding chapter in the nation.

Wobser won honorable mention in the Region II Gaston Scholarship competition with a performance of "O luce di quest' anima" from Gaetano Donizetti's opera "Linda di Chamounix." Lindkvist is the chapter's nominee for the Nolle National Scholarship, to be awarded in late April.

Writing Workshop

CommonSpace is collaborative writing software that allows a group of users to create and revise an electronic document together. Owens pioneered the use of computer networking and collaborative writing software at Friends University.

Classes in which he used such techniques included computer-assisted and traditional composition, creative writing, literary criticism, history of the English language, and American and world literature. Exit-exam and student evaluation data indicate that the courses were highly successful.

Owens' presentation will be held in the Newton Gresham Library Multimedia Lab (Room 200), and is limited to the first l27 faculty members who make reservations to attend.

Courses Listed

The courses and their dates include: Paralegal Certificate Course (May 3-July 12); Mediation Basic Training (May 15-17 and May 22-24); Nurse Aide Training (June 8-19), Family Mediation Training (June 26-28) and Food Handler Courses (every two weeks).

Summer courses will include Introduction to Computers, Jump Back to the 70s, Hustle Class, Line Dancing Class and Growing Your Own Herb Garden.

Writers Honored

Lisha Moore was presented a plaque and $50 as the second place honoree, and Caroline Moore, Steven Snyder, and Scot Hulshizer received honorable mention.

The awards were presented at a reception honoring student and faculty writers, Phil Parotti, professor of English, spoke on "Practice and Training for Practical Writing."

One hundred twenty-six students were nominated as outstanding writers and were presented certificates by SHSU President Bobby Marks.

Arts Events

Performing that concert will be the Huntsville Community Choral Society, Sam Houston State University Symphonic Chorus and the Texas Baroque Ensemble. Featured soloists will include Wayne Barrett, Robert Best, Jackson Felder, Patti Spain, Barbara Corbin, Roger Bryant, David Grogan, Alan Strong and Charles Lang.

Other music events will include the Student Brass Quintet in the Recital Hall at 4 p.m. Sunday, the Percussion Ensemble in Killinger Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Monday, graduate voice recital by Amy Estes at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Recital Hall and student clarinet recital by Chrissie Deramee at 5 p.m. Saturday in the Recital Hall.

This week will be the last opportunity to view prison folk art on display at the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery. The exhibit is open each day from noon to 5 p.m. weekdays through Thursday. There is no admission fee.
