SHSU Symphony Orchestra to Honor Cellist

The concert is scheduled for 8 p.m. in the Beto Criminal Justice Center Killinger Auditorium. Carol Smith, the Symphony conductor, said that the later-than-usual starting time was selected to allow those who are involved in Wednesday evening church choir rehearsals to attend.

Smith said that Hornbeck has been an outstanding student and Symphony member, completing all course work in December, 1997, for two bachelor's degrees, in music and business administration.

In the fall of 1997, Hornbeck was selected by the string faculty to receive the prestigious Ahysen-Towler Scholarship Award. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hornbeck of Bryan, who are establishing, in their son's honor, an endowment to be used by the Symphony for string scholarships.

The concert will feature one hour of music miniatures including American composer Aaron Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man" and two string tunes--the Hohvaness "Prayer for St. Gregory," with graduate student Diane Hilbert as trumpet soloist, and a composition in the Baroque style entitled "Palladio" by Kurt Jenkins.

The remaining two works are full orchestra selections--an instrumental arrangement of the aria "nessun dorma" from Puccini's "Turandot," and the fourth movement from English composer Gustav Holst's "The Planets." The latter is entitled "Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity." Smith will share the podium with graduate assistant James Marley Winslow and Hornbeck. Winslow is originally from Detroit, and came to SHSU after receiving his undergraduate performance degree from the Sheperd School of Music at Rice University.

Admission to Wednesday's concert will be free to Friends of Music and students with SHSU identification. All others are $5, or $2 for students.

Music Benefit Golf Tournament Scheduled

Proceeds from the tournament go into a scholarship endowment in the Music Department at Sam Houston State.

Format for the event is a four-person scramble. Play is scheduled to begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Players may enter as members of teams or individually, to be placed on a team. The entry fee of $100 per player includes free practice balls, cart, refreshments and barbecue lunch. Awards include first, second and third place team trophies, awards for individual contests, and a Chrysler car for the first hole-in-one.

"The chances of someone scoring a hole-in-one should be above average," said Charlotte Tull. "Mickey loved golf, and I've never seen him more excited than when he made his second hole-in-one (at Elkins Lake)."

In the pro shop afterward, he attributed it to "clean living."

Charlotte said she was not playing with Mickey when he made his first ace, using a beat-up ball over a water hole at the Conroe Country Club.

She also remembers an unusual par he made on the tough par 3 fourth hole at Elkins Lake. After hitting his first shot out of bounds, Mickey inspected his divot and proclaimed that he had discovered what he had done wrong. Sure enough, his third shot (counting the out-of-bounds penalty) went into the hole.

For those unable to play in the fund-raiser, sponsorships are also available at $100 per hole and $100 to sponsor a music/student golfer as a "designated hitter." Direct contributions to the scholarship fund will also be gratefully accepted.

Sam Houston Trio Plus Four

The trio of Luba Velickovic, violin, Peter Kempter, cello, and Charlotte Tull, piano, will be joined by clarinetist Tamara Raatz for the first half of the program and by students Cindy Simpkins, viola, and Susan Wideman, violin, during the second half.

The group has been performing since 1992 with Kempter and Tull as founding members. Velickovic, Kempter, Raatz and Tull are faculty members. Simpkins and Wideman are students who are outstanding leaders in the SHSU Symphony Orchestra.

Their program scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Recital Hall includes three works. The first is Robert Schumann's "Quartet, op. 47."

"In this work a transformation occurs--viola to clarinet," said Tull. "This was a rather common practice in the 19th century and the net result is musically satisfying for both performers and audience."

The second half of the program will open with "Overture on Hebrew Themes" by Prokofiev, scored for string quartet, clarinet and piano, and for this work the group will increase to six.

The closing work is "Divertimento from Gimpel the Fool" by Schiff. The title comes from an operate written by Schiff in 1982, in which he extracted themes from the staged version and scored the four movement suite for clarinet, violin, cell and piano.

TASP Math Workshops

TASP is the state-mandated test that provides information on a potential college student's reading, mathematics and writing skills, and which must be passed before a student is allowed to accumulate more than nine semester hours of credit.

Michael Barstow, a Learning Assistance Center math tutor, will present a program on "Linear Equations & Quadratics" at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Linda Wright, mathematics lecturer, will present a workshop on word problems at noon to 1:45 p.m. Thursday. Students are invited to bring their own problems.

April Kmiec, Learning Assistance Center math tutor, will present "Similar Triangles" at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

Learning Assistance Center officials said that Wednesday is the deadline for applying for the next TASP test, to be given at several locations throughout Texas on Saturday (May 9). "Emergency" registration, at an increased fee, is also possible through May 6. Call (512) 927-5398 for registration and information.

Big Week for Criminal Justice

The Beto Chair lecture for that day will feature David Bayley, distinguished professor and dean of the school of criminal justice at the State University of New York-Albany. Bayley will speak on "The Worldwide Frontier of Policing" at 2 p.m. in the Kerper Courtroom of the Beto Criminal Justice Center.
