Copy Time Owner Honors Grandparents

Slaughter established the Copy Time/Milton Reynolds Scholarships in Computer Science in memory of his grandfather, targeting students who may have begun their computer science studies with average or less-than-average grade point averages, but who have shown measurable progress and improvement.

He established the Copy Time/Annie Kelton Reynolds Achievement Scholarship in honor of his grandmother, for students majoring in any discipline within the College of Business Administration, and who exhibit an interest in entrepreneurship.

Slaughter said that his grandfather died at an early age, leaving his grandmother and 14 children. Despite advice from relatives and friends that she break up the family, his grandmother farmed and worked where she could, and kept them all together.

She also worked for 20 years, from the ages of 50 to 70, for the U. S. Postal Service. She now lives in Midway, and has seen 13 of her children and grandchildren graduate from Sam Houston State. Slaughter, a 1984 SHSU graduate, said that in the next few years that number could grow to 20.

Gary Bouse, executive director for university advancement at Sam Houston State, said that the Reynolds scholarships and the story behind them will be an inspiration to the future SHSU students that they help.

David S. Burris, coordinator of the Computing Science Program, and R. Dean Lewis, dean of the College of Business Administration, are coordinating selection of recipients for the two scholarships.

Faculty/Staff Scramble

The tournament is sponsored by the SHSU Department of Recreational Sports. Contestants may enter as either members of four-player teams or individually, to be assigned to a team.

Teams should include only one "A" player (average score of 79 or better).

The entry fee of $30 per person includes 18-hole greens fee, cart, driving range access, a goodie bag, soft drinks by Coca-Cola, and a barbecue lunch.

There will be team awards for first and second place, with the winning team given the traveling trophy for a year. In addition, there will be a post-tournament raffle, in which everyone is guaranteed to win a prize, and contests for longest drive in men's and women's categories and closest to the pin.

Tournament sponsors include University Cleaners, Newman's Office Supply, G&O Barber Shop, The Parker House-Bed/Breakfast, Cafe Texan, Westwood Shores Country Club, The Huntsville Item, Mazzio's, Whataburger, Texas Burger, Tune Up Plus, Zach's, Huntsville Lanes, Coca-Cola, and Huntsville Therapeutic Massage Center.

Semester Winds Down

Finals are scheduled to begin Wednesday evening for Wednesday night classes, and Thursday for other classes, running through Tuesday, May 12. Spring commencement exercises are scheduled for Saturday, May 16.

There will be two ceremonies in Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum--at 10 a.m. for graduates in the colleges of Education and Applied Science and Criminal Justice, and 2 p.m. for graduates of the colleges of Business and Arts and Sciences.

Robert Dunning, SHSU registrar, advises that all degree candidates should go by the Registrar's Office or call (409) 294-1061 between 9 a.m. and noon May 15, to confirm completion of degree requirements.

Dunning also suggests that commencement ceremony guests with disabilities, who would like to sit in special sections on the coliseum floor, should arrive at least 45 minutes before the ceremony is scheduled to begin and enter the coliseum through the east tunnel. University police will direct guests with disabilities to a special parking area just east of the coliseum.

Dunning said that because space on the coliseum floor is limited, each guest with a disability should be accompanied on the floor by no more than one person.

Summer sessions are scheduled for June 3 through July 8 and July 9-Aug. 12. Summer commencement is Aug. 15.

The fall semester begins Aug. 24.

Music Events

Alisse Wobser will present a voice recital at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Walker Education Center. Eric Della Vecchia will present a saxophone recital at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the Recital Hall.

On Monday, Diane Hilbert will present a graduate student recital on the trumpet at 6 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, and Luvanna Brown will present a piano recital in the Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m.

The Music Department Honors Recital is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Recital Hall.
