Friends of Music Gala is Tuesday

The concert will feature performances by many of the SHSU music department's talented faculty members, and will conclude with a special reception in Austin Hall.

Featured composers will include Sergei Rachmaninoff, Alexander Glazunov, Karl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Richard Strauss, Leonard Bernstein, Giovanni Platti and Alberto Ginastera.

Performers will include Hiromi Matsunaga, Peggy DeMers, Jay Whatley, Natalie Syring, David Fleming, Julianne Best, Scott Plugge, Heather Hamilton and John Paul.

Benefits of membership in Friends of Music, which vary by level of membership, include season passes, performance schedule mailings, names listed in each program, business names listed, invitations to numerous receptions, and invitations to special invitation-only events.

Membership levels range from $25 to $500 and more. Donations of $1,000 or more entitle donors to establish named scholarships, perhaps as a memorial or as promotion for a business.

Diversity Conference Registration Under Way

"Empowering Students for the New Millennium" is theme for this year's conference, which targets educators, alumni, administrators and students. It is co-sponsored by the university and the Bilingual Education Student Organization.

Maria Seidner, director of bilingual education programs at the Texas Education Agency and an expert in educational programs and policies affecting students with limited English proficiency is the keynote speaker.

Harry Bohan, retired distinguished professor of education at Sam Houston State, author of numerous textbooks, and an international expert in mathematics, will give the closing speech.

Sessions on approximately 20 topics such as "Adult Education Training," "Gifted and Talented," "Early Childhood," "Asian Americans," "Dance and the Arts", "Grading and Assessment" and "Spanish-Speaking Cultures and Traditions" will be offered.

Conference registration includes lunch. The schedule of registration fees, which includes a price break for registration before Sept. 15 and for groups, is available by contacting Michele R. Hewlett-Gomez, bilingual education specialist at SHSU and faculty adviser to the Bilingual Education Student Organization.

Golden Key Chapter Wins Award

Five members of the SHSU chapter attended the award presentation, during which they were presented a plaque by James Lewis, executive director of the national organization.

Chapter members who attended included Nam Nguyen, president; Heather Louden and Heather Dunnuck, historians; Angie Oliverson, graduate adviser; and Bryan Dobkins, publicity chairman.

Most Improved Chapter awards are presented to chapters that have been active for more than a year and have most drastically improved their leadership and involvement.

Golden Key is a non-profit, international academic honors organization that provides academic recognition, leadership opportunities, career networking, community service and scholarships. The society has 270 chapters in the United States, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Australia, Canada and Malaysia.

Membership in the society is by invitation to the top juniors and seniors in all fields of study. The SHSU chapter will hold a campus awareness campaign from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 21-23 in the Lowman Student Center Mall.

William B. Green, who chairs the department of economics and business analysis, serves as adviser to the SHSU chapter.

Excel Series Continues

"Don't Sleep with Your Professors...and Other Helpful Suggestions" will be presented from 4:30 - 6 p.m. Tuesday in Lowman Student Center room 303.

Also, "Work at the Car Wash or Become a Genius" will be presented from 4-6 p.m. in room 304.

Continuing Education Courses Starting

Spanish will be offered Tuesdays and Thursdays through Nov. 12, beginning Tuesday at 6 p.m. Maria Perez-Gerling is the instructor, and the fee is $125. Medical Terminology also begins Tuesday at 6 p.m., and continues each Tuesday and Thursday through Oct. 1. Marjorie Archie is the instructor, and the fee is $150 not including textbook.

The two dance courses will both be taught by Jimmie Morris, both beginning Friday evening, with a fee of $30 per person. Ballroom Dancing is scheduled for 6-7 p.m. and Country and Western for 7-8 p.m.
