Parents' Weekend '98

The $14-per-parent registration fee buys a plate of barbecue and a reserved seat at the grid-iron battle between the SHSU Bearkats and the Javelinas from Texas A&M Kingsville.

Parents' Weekend actually kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday night with a leadership reception in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom. The event provides an opportunity for parents to get to know some of the students in charge of various campus clubs and organizations. Following the reception a comedy show will be staged at the LSC Pizza Hut.

Saturday's fun begins with registration in the LSC lobby where a caricature artist will be on hand to sketch amusing portraits of Parents' Weekend participants. The lobby is also the spot to pick up the latest schedule of the day's many special events.

For the curious, a series of tours and open houses will be conducted across campus during the day. Of special interest will be tours of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum, historic Austin Hall and the Peabody Library, and the Gaddis Geeslin Art Gallery. SHSU sororities will open their doors to parents between 10 and 11 a.m.

The SHSU Parents Association, sponsors of Parents' Weekend '98, will meet at 11 a.m. in the LSC Teaching Theater. From noon until 1:30 p.m. Cafe Belvin will offer parents an all-you-can-eat feast of campus cuisine.

The SHSU Chorale and Concert Choir will perform for free at 1:30 p.m. in the Killinger Auditorium of the Criminal Justice Center. At 2 p.m. casino games will be offered at the LSC Ballroom and the LadyKat volleyball team will take on Stephen F. Austin in the Johnson Coliseum.

Parents wanting a glimpse of what's haute in campus apparel shouldn't miss the Bearkat Fashion Revue slated for 2:45 p.m. in the Killinger Auditorium. Following the show the auditorium will be the setting for a pledge and scholarship presentation beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Younger brothers and sisters tagging along for Parents Weekend '98 will be treated to "Kiddy Movies and Playtime" at the Baptist Student Union between 1:30 and 4 p.m.

The combination barbecue dinner and "Kat Kall" pep rally, complete with live entertainment, takes off at 5 p.m. in the coliseum. And of course, gametime is 7 p.m. at Bowers Stadium.

Also at 7 p.m. Saturday, the SHSU Theatre and Dance Department's Annual Scholarship Gala, this year themed "Vaudeville Revisited," gets under way at the University Theatre Center. Tickets cost $45 before Sept. 19 and may be ordered by calling (409) 294-1329.

Parents Weekend '98 winds down with a Caf� Belvin breakfast served between 8 and 10 a.m. Sunday and an interdenominational worship service from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. at the Old Main Pit.

Elderhostel Program Scheduled, Classes Starting

Marian Fletcher, elderhostel and continuing education coordinator, said that the rate will include all tours, trips and meals. The full cost of the program for those requiring a hotel is $390.

"We have 19 people registered already from all over the U. S. and are very excited about the program," said Fletcher.

Activities for the week will include programs and visits involving the Sam Houston Memorial Museum, Sam Houston Statue/Visitor Center, Gibbs-Powell Historic House, George Bush Presidential Library in College Station, Washington-on-the-Brazos and the Antique Rose Emporium near there, as well as presentations on criminal justice issues by James Marquart and Sam Souryal of the SHSU College of Criminal Justice.

Traditional continuing education courses starting this week include "Nurse's Aide Training on Mondays and Thursdays, (Sept. 14 - Nov. 12). The class costs $295. On Mondays and Wednesdays, (Sept. 14 - Oct. 7) "Introduction to Computers" will be taught at a cost of $150.

Vaudeville Revisited

The event includes ballroom dancing, vaudeville acts performed by Department of Theatre and Dance students, backstage tours, a silent auction, and "A Taste of Huntsville."

The Toomey Starks Band will provide the dance music and various Huntsville food service businesses will provide food for the "Taste of Huntsville."

One Exhibit Closes, Another Opens

A closing reception is scheduled for Thursday (Sept. 17) from 5 - 7 p.m.

The Gaddis Geeslin Gallery is located in Art Building F, on the southwest corner of the SHSU campus near Sam Houston Ave. and 21st St. The gallery is open from noon to 5 p.m. on weekdays and there is no admission fee.

Sculptures and paintings by Bonnie Jon and Tedd Pettibon will be on exhibit at the Lowman Student Center Art Gallery through Sept. 25. The LSC gallery is open 8-5, and there is no admission fee. Call 409-294-1760 for details.

'The Great Masters'

Janis White, who along with Laura K. Burleson made one of the costumes that will be shown by professional models in Houston Oct. 3, said that last year more than $400,000 was collected at the event. A second costume, made by SHSU student Anna M. Black and a friend, Amanda Merillat, will also be shown.

Interested SHSU faculty, staff and students will have an opportunity to see the two creations from 2-4 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 17) at a special showing in the Mattie B. Medford Living Center, AB2, room 207.

The gala has a theme of "The Great Masters," which means that costumes were inspired by masterpiece paintings. It is sponsored by the Texas Gulf Coast Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers.

Counseling Center Sessions Begin

Topics covered will include time management, textbook reading, note taking, taking exams, procrastination and relationships with students and faculty.

Monday sessions are 2:30 to 4 p.m., Tuesday's from 3 to 4 p.m., Wednesday's from 10:30 to noon, and Thursday's from 9:30 to 11 a.m. from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the SHSU Counseling Center located in the north annex of the Lee Drain Building.

Excel Student Enrichment Continues

Monday's sessions include "Strategic Management of Your Career" from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in LSC 303. "Becoming Your Own Agent: Making an Improvement in Your Life," is scheduled for 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in LSC 303, and "Sexual Assault: Rights & Responsibilities" is set for 4 to 5 p.m. in LSC room 304.

Tuesday's presentations will include "Maintaining a Positive Mental Attitude: A Check From the Neck Up" from 2-4 p.m. in LSC room 303. "Tips on How to Succeed In or Out of the Classroom" is slated for 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the LSC Theater.

"Foreign Languages: Vehicles for Success" is set for Wednesday from 1-2 p.m. in the LSC room 303. On Thursday "Parliamentary Procedure for Beginners" will be presented from 3-5 p.m. in LSC room 304.

Rural 2000 Technology Conference

Rural 2000 is a consortium of educational institutions, government, business and service organizations interested in seeing that rural communities in East Texas are able to access state-of-the-art technology.

Conference topics will include: "Statewide Telecom Internet Solutions," "Optimizing Your Network Internet Connection," and "Community Network and Internet Applications."

ID Details

Dana Grant, coordinator of the ID program, said that last week 4,400 students had IDs made, with more than 7,500 yet to do so. Students should bring a paid fee receipt, their current drivers license or current student ID.

Faculty and staff members should also bring old ID cards. While there has been no official date set for the old cards to become non-acceptable, Grant said she hoped that everyone would have new ones made "as soon as possible."
