Community/Campus Members Invited to Sing

"The chorus was formed to combine the university and non-university communities, and we need more faculty, staff, and community members to join our efforts," said Miller.

"We schedule a choral masterworks concert accompanied by orchestra once a semester," he said. "We are particularly looking for additional men's voices, but all voices are welcome. If you and/or someone you know have simply been waiting for an invitation to join us, please consider this the invitation."

Rehearsals take place on Monday evenings and begin Monday, (Sept 28) at 7 p.m. in Room 202 (the choral rehearsal hall) in the Fine Arts (Music) Building on the SHSU campus.

The Fall Masterwork Concert will feature Ralph Vaughan Williams's Christmas Cantata, "Hodie." It will be performed, in English, on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m. The Spring Masterwork Concert will be performed on April 20.

"There is a wide variety of abilities and experience within our chorus--some are leaders, some are followers, and others fall in the middle," said Miller. "I understand there are many singers in our faculty, and this talent and experience should be shared with others.

Anyone with questions should contact Miller, the Huntsville Community Chorus/SHSU Symphonic Chorus conductor, at 409-294-1391. Miller said that singers from throughout the area, not just residents of Huntsville, are welcome to participate.

Music, Art, Literature

The exhibit features the creations of design, ceramics, sculpture, painting, drawing, printmaking and graphic design students.

On Tuesday, SHSU music faculty member Peggy DeMers will perform a horn recital at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall. She will be accompanied by Jay Whatley on the piano.

The program includes pieces by Carl Nielson, Louis Piantoni, Alexander Glazunov, Alexander Zemlinsky, and Richard Strauss. A reception hosted by members of DeMers's horn studio will be held in the Reception Hall after the performance. For ticket information contact the music department at 409-294-1360.

"A Chorus Line" takes the SHSU Mainstage Theatre stage Wednesday with performances scheduled nightly at 8 p.m. and a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee.

Conceived and originally directed and choreographed by Michael Bennett and based on a book by James Kirkwood and Nicholas Dante, the performance features music by Marvin Hamlisch and lyrics by Edward Kleban. The SHSU production will be directed by Jonathan Charles.

Award-winning fiction writer and essayist Dagoberto Gilb will read from his work at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Smith-Hutson Business Building Auditorium, with a reception and book signing to follow.

Gilb's appearance is in conjunction with the observance of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 16). He was originally scheduled to appear Sept. 24. The program is open to SHSU students, faculty and staff and Huntsville area residents. There is no admission fee.

A Cooperative of Women Artists Juried Art Show will be held at the Katy and E. Don Walker Sr. Education Center located on the Sam Houston Memorial Museum grounds. For more information, contact the museum at 409-294-1832.

Lexis-Nexis Available

Called Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe, the database is available at: http://web.lexis-nexis.com/universe/.

It provides access to foreign news sources, regional U. S. news services, radio and television transcripts, federal and state case law, medical, legislative and industry news, annual reports from the Securities and Exchange Commission, and more. Newspapers are updated several times daily and wire services hourly.

"This otherwise prohibitively expensive database will now become available to millions of students and professors across the nation," said Richard Wood, director of library services.

"It is somewhat controversial, however, because the company required the 600 or more libraries included in the agreement to allow companies to advertise their products on the information retrieval screens. To further trim costs to make it affordable to more libraries, the company has cut many titles available in a full version of Lexis-Nexis."

Nevertheless, Wood expects great interest in and use of Academic Universe.

Mental Health Awareness and Screening

Pamela McManus, a counseling psychologist, said that free confidential screenings will be offered in the areas of alcohol problems, eating problems, anxiety and depression. There will also be informational lectures and video tapes about these topics.

The program is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom. There will be lectures on the various topics--alcohol at 8:30 a.m., open forum on all topics, 9:30 a.m., and depression, 11 a.m.

IDs Being Made

For students who are taking night classes, the office will be open late Monday-Thursday Sept 28 - Oct 1 from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. to process IDs.

Apple Update

Discussion topics include: the iMac (one will be demonstrated), universal serial bus devices, new G3 PowerBooks and desktops, Operating System 8.5, and the virtual PC.

Doug Pryor, account executive for HiEd, Inc. will make the presentation.
