Charity Events

Throughout the month a committee of SHSU faculty, staff, and students will be conducting the "Together We Care" State Employee Charitable Contribution Campaign.

"This is the workplace campaign giving our faculty, staff and students the opportunity to make a voluntary gift to the charities of choice, including local ones," said Mary Evelyn Collins, SHSU campaign coordinator.

Collins explained that the statewide campaign was enacted by legislation in 1994 to offer Texas state employees giving options with hundreds of charitable choices, from local to national. SHSU personnel will be receiving brochures listing participating organizations. The Walker County United Way is among the agencies listed.

All of the listed charities were screened at the local and state levels to assure that administrative costs are within acceptable limits, said Collins. The brochures being distributed by Collins' committee give information such as the percentage of budget spent on administrative costs, and a phone number for the organization.

Collins said that SHSU employees can participate this month by cash or check or payroll deduction beginning in January.

"Together We Care" committee members include student Steve Hollie, Anita Aungst, Sandy Baker, Charles Capps, Tommy Childers, Paula Culak, Allison Dean, Elsie Hamer, John Holcombe, Jeannine Hirtle, Shirley Miller, Angie Moore, Karen Murph, Ruth Triplett, Mac Woodward, and Pam Henderson (ex officio).

Also this week, the 19th Annual United Way Sale-a-thon is slated for 7-10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday on SHSU and Huntsville's Cable Channel 7.

Octubafest Highlights Fine Arts Week

Octubafest '98 has a student recital scheduled at 5 p.m. Sunday, a Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble Concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, and a Faculty Recital at 7:30 p. m. Tuesday, all in the Recital Hall.

Student performers will include David Smith-Barry, Ray Hilley, Jay Whatley, Jesus Ibarra, Chris Vincent, Wendie Spence, Wyatt Gilley, Jeremy Sawyer, John Winebrenner, Nathan Manges, Carson Talbot and Matthew Boozer.

Performers for Tuesday's concert will be Robert Daniel (tuba), Henry Howey (euphonium and tuba), Kathy Daniel (flute), Alec Warren (percussion), Ann Lee (piano) and Jay Whatley (piano).

Also this week, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Recital Hall, Hiromi Matsunaga will give a faculty piano recital. Her program will include pieces by Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Ginastera, Chopin and Copland.

Admission to all of the music events is free to SHSU and public school students, SHSU faculty, and Friends of Music, and $5 for general admission.

"Dances at Eight," two evenings of dance by the SHSU Theatre and Dance Department, are scheduled for 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday in the Dance Theatre located in Academic Building 3. Admission is $2.

In the art category, a closing reception for "A Collaborative Happening," an exhibition of diverse artworks at the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery, will be held Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. The show ends Friday.

The Gaddis Geeslin Gallery is located at 1028 21st Street on the southwest corner of the SHSU campus in Art Building F.

Technology Speakers

Debbi Hatton, director of forensics and instructor in communications, and Ruth Pate, instructor in journalism, were among 60 individuals from throughout the world invited to participate.

Discussion topics will include community/economic development, business, human services, education, legal and public policy, and international issues.

Hatton and Pate are also developing a handbook and Web site in conjunction with a presentation scheduled next spring at the Capitalizing on Your Computer Investment Conference in Washington, D. C. They will conduct a workshop on how to implement interactive media-rich materials into the classroom.

Events include the Golden Circle Reunion ($15) at 11 a.m. Friday (Oct. 30), Distinguished Alumni Awards Reception and Dinner ($30) at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Faculty/Alumni Coffee (no charge) at 8-10 a.m. Saturday, and the Lettermen Association Hall of Honor Luncheon ($20) at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Bank Executive Seminar

A seminar on risk management and issues dealing with the community bank's portfolio will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m., followed by lunch and a golf tournament, said James B. Bexley, who holds the Smith-Hutson Endowed Chair of Banking at SHSU.

Bexley said that events such as the one Monday and others made possible by the Smith-Hutson Endowment are increasing SHSU's reputation as a national leader in banking academics.
