SHSU Update for Week of Nov. 1

Research on Women in Education

Three Sam Houston State University faculty members and a doctoral student participated in the 24th annual Research on Women in Education conference held recently at Michigan State University.

Genevieve Brown and Beverly Irby, faculty members in SHSU's Educational Leadership and Counseling Department, and doctoral student Claudia Iselt, a principal in the Spring Branch school district, made a presentation which focused on leadership preparation for female superintendents.

Robin McGrew-Zoubi, assistant professor in the Curriculum and Instruction Department, presented a paper entitled "Fractured Stereotypes: A Comparison of Women in Science in the United States and Jordan."

In addition, Irby, the organization's treasurer, and Brown, were members of the conference planning committee.

SHSU Residence Life Wins Big

Residence Life staff members from SHSU were big winners at the annual Southwest Association of College and University Housing Officers Resident Assistant Conference held recently in Conway, Ark.

Of the four awards given at the conference, the SHSU delegation won Most Spirited, Best Skit and Best Program.

"We were especially delighted with the last award, as that indicates one of our presentations was the best rated for the entire conference," said E. Thayne King, director of Residence Life.

SHSU was represented by 27 resident assistants and house managers and five residence hall directors. Approximately 25 schools from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana also attended.

Music Events for Week

A Faculty Wind Quintet Recital, featuring works by Carl Nielsen, Jacques Ibert, and Malcolm Arnold, highlights a busy music week at SHSU.

The Wind Quintet will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 5) at the Recital Hall. Performers will include Ann Fairbanks (flute), Spring Hill (oboe), Tamara Raatz (clarinet), Peggy DeMers (horn), and Scott Phillips (bassoon.)

Also scheduled this week is a Student Wind Quintet Recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Music Recital Hall, featuring works by Nielsen, Danzi and Schuller. Performers will include Crystle Chambers (flute), Janet Ingram (clarinet), Erica Thonsgard (oboe), Suzanne Scott (horn) and Andrea Kilgore (bassoon).

A faculty recital featuring Spring Hill (oboe) and Scott Phillips (bassoon), with Robert Brewer (piano) and Peter Kempter (cello), is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Recital Hall. A Student Brass Quintet performance is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.Wednesday in the Recital Hall.

Math, Writing Workshops Scheduled

Texas Academic Skills Program (TASP) workshops continue this week and next, with sessions on math and writing.

On Thursday (Nov. 5) 6-8 p.m., a "Combination of Mathematical Skills" will be taught by Learning Assistance Center tutor Josh Robbins. A TASP writing workshop entitled "Common Errors in Usage" is scheduled for 4-6 p.m. (Nov. 9).

On Nov. 11, 6-8 p.m., a "Students' Choice" math workshop will be taught by tutor Amanda Creel. Students are invited to bring word problems. On Nov. 12, 6-8 p.m., "Solving Systems of Equations," will also taught by Robbins.

All workshops are in the Learning Assistance Center, rooms 116 and 117 of the Gresham Library.

Museum Exhibits Masks and Puppets

Upcoming Sam Houston Memorial Museum events include an exhibit entitled "Masks and Puppets," which opens Monday and runs through December in the Walker Education Center Exhibit Gallery.

The exhibit features the work of SHSU art faculty member William J. Breitenbach.

Also, on Saturday (Nov. 7) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Museum will sponsor a pottery demonstration at the pottery shed on the Museum Grounds.
