Summer Enrollment Shows Little Change

Key dates for the Summer I and Summer II sessions include Summer I finals scheduled July 7, Summer II registration July 8, Summer II finals Aug. 12, and Summer Commencement ceremonies at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Aug. 15 in Johnson Coliseum.

Classes for the 1998 fall semester will begin Aug. 26.

School Administration Workshop

Sponsored by the Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling in the College of Education and Applied Science and the Region VI Education Service Center, the workshop is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. in the Lowman Student Center. The first general session is scheduled for 8:30 a.m.

Speakers will include Mark Littleton, executive director of the State Board of Education Certification program; Jim Walsh, an Austin lawyer; Sandy Nolan, Linda Reaves and Carol Reid from the Region VI Education Service Center; Judi Benestante, superintendent of the Richards school district; Leonard Merrell, superintendent of the Katy district; and Toody Byrd, a motivational speaker formerly with the Eanes school district.

Marion Czaja, the conference coordinator, said that participants may still register for the event at 8 a.m., but will not be able to participate in the noon luncheon. For more information, contact Czaja at (409) 294-1148.

Abshire Honored by Department

But this is what happened recently in the Department of Management and Marketing in Sam Houston State University's College of Business Administration. Receiving the plaudits and a special award for administrative excellence was Roger D. Abshire, who has chaired the department since 1993.

In a light-hearted presentation ceremony, Nelson Thornton, senior faculty member in the department, observed that Abshire's experience as a tank commander was probably appropriate training for his current position.

Thornton remarked that faculty members appreciate Abshire's willingness to listen to their proposals, and that his management philosophy is captured by his frequent comment, "Let's talk about that."

Also attending the presentation were Bobby K. Marks, Sam Houston president; David Payne, vice president for academic affairs; R. Dean Lewis, dean of the College of Business Administration; Dean Emeritus James Gilmore; and Ross Lovell, who previously chaired the department.

Students Selected by Alpha Chi

Patrik Lindkvist, a member of Alpha Chi's Texas Omicron chapter at Sam Houston State, was one of 10 students selected from 45 nominees for a $1,500 Alfred H. Nolle Scholarship.

Tannie H. Shannon of Sam Houston State was elected to a two-year term as a student representative for the society's Region II. The society has chapters on some 300 campuses, and is divided into seven regions.

Patricia Williams, professor of curriculum and instruction and director of the SHSU Across-the-University Writing Program, is the Sam Houston group's faculty sponsor, and has held several top positions regionally and nationally. She currently serves as national vice president.

The Sam Houston chapter was one of 28 recognized at the 1997 National Convention of Alpha Chi as a Star Chapter.

Faculty Members Receive Grant

David K. Ruch, Peter A. Cooper, Gregory D. Foley, and Mark L. Klespis, were awarded the grant for a project entitled "A Computer Lab For an Integrated, Introductory Mathematics and Computer Science Course."

Sam Houston State University will match the grant for establishment of the computer lab in the Lee Drain Building.

Cooper said that SHSU is combining introductory math and computing science courses into a six-hour integrated course based on inquiry learning and problem solving.

He said that educators believe that students learn best when confronted with the need for a particular skill, and that the new course will be built around the presentation of problems requiring math/computing science skills.

Study Skills Workshops Offered

The study skills groups meet twice a week for five, 90-minute sessions. Participants will learn time management skills, test taking strategies, how to read a textbook, and more.

The groups meet from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays beginning June 15 and from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning June 16.
