Fall semester nears

Residence halls will re-open for the 1998 Fall Semester at Sam Houston State University on Sunday, Aug. 23. Orientation for freshmen and transfer students is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 24, as well as registration for undergraduate students who have not registered previously.

The general faculty meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, in the Criminal Justice Center Auditorium, with meetings of individual colleges at 10:30 a.m.

Registration will continue Tuesday, with first classes scheduled on Wednesday.

The general staff meeting is scheduled for Sept. 2 at 3 p.m. in the Criminal Justice Center Auditorium.

Students win in area competition

Two Sam Houston State University College of Business Administration graduate students have won awards for papers submitted in a competition with other Houston-area universities including Texas A&M and the University of Houston.

The competition was sponsored by the American Production and Inventory Control Society's Houston chapter.

Chris Sower won 2nd place and a $200 cash award for his paper entitled "Machine Vision's Effect on Quality." Karen Dickens won 3rd place and a $100 cash award for her paper entitled "Continuous Quality Improvement: Adoption of Quality Management Principles in Hospitals."

Both papers resulted from research the students conducted during the 1998 spring semester. They will receive their awards at the September meeting of the Houston chapter.

Since 1993, SHSU students have won 1st place in the Houston chapter competition four times, 2nd place six times, and 3rd place once.

Seven receive commissions

Seven Sam Houston State University Army ROTC students received commissions Friday in ceremonies held on the SHSU campus.

Col. (Ret.) Paul Gentry of Huntsville was the guest speaker for the ceremony, conducted by Professor of Military Science Lt. Col. Robert Oates.

Students who were commissioned and their first assignments include Tony Hearn, Jay Wisham, and Shawn Patrick, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.; John Parks and Derrick Williams, Fort Gordon, Ga.,; Ed Phelps, Fort Bliss, Texas; and Brian Stogdill, Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Livestock show provides scholarships

Brian Hinkel of Katy and Jason Brod of Sealy have been selected to receive two $10,000 four-year scholarships provided by the San Antonio Livestock Show and Exposition.

Bobby Lane, who chairs the Department of Agricultural Sciences, said that both students are incoming freshmen, were active in the FFA (formerly Future Farmers of America), and have outstanding high school academic records.

Roadside cross exhibit continues

Approximately 40 colorful computer-manipulated drawings of Texas roadside crosses, by Texas artist Chuck Drumm, are on display in the Lowman Student Center Gallery through Aug. 21.

Drumm teaches art part-time at SHSU.

"Rather than retaining the macabre nature of these roadside crosses," she said, "the resulting images convey what can only be described as a prettiness. The long, continuous clothesline creates a personal, accessible space."

Admission to the exhibit, which is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., is free.
