Farnworth Named Acting
Criminal Justice Dean

Replaces Flanagan July 1

Margaret Farnworth, who has served as associate dean for academic administration in Sam Houston State University's College of Criminal Justice since 1993, has been named acting dean of the college.

Farnworth will replace Timothy J. Flanagan, effective July 1. Flanagan was named vice president for academic affairs at the State University of New York at Brockport.

Farnworth said her first goal as acting dean is to direct a search for additional faculty, while the university conducts a search to fill the dean's position on a permanent basis.

"The College of Criminal Justice has experienced substantial attrition to its numbers in the last few years," said Farnworth. "We plan a national search for several faculty members to return our college to full force. Despite our reduced numbers, we are building from a position of scholarly strength and reputation, and expect to attract top-notch scholars to our faculty next year."

Farnworth's appointment was announced by David Payne, vice president for academic affairs.

"We are pleased to have someone of Dr. Farnworth's caliber to serve in this position," said Payne. "She will provide continuity while the search for a permanent dean is under way. She has had an outstanding research, teaching, and administrative record."

Farnworth received a doctoral degree in sociology from the University of Georgia in 1981 and held academic positions at The University of Albany, State University of New York and at The University of Florida.

Farnworth enjoys a national reputation for her research in the areas of juvenile delinquency and court processing, and has also researched and written on the areas of social inequality and crime, and women and crime.

She now serves as an associate editor of "Justice Quarterly" and on the board of editors of "Women & Criminal Justice," and has previously served as editor or on editorial boards for "Journal of Social Pathology," "Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology," "Criminal Justice Research Bulletin," "Journal of Criminal Justice Education" and "Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency."

She chairs or serves on a number of national professional association committees and SHSU and College of Criminal Justice committees.
