FLANAGAN NAMED VICE PRESIDENT

Leaves SHSU After Seven Years

SUNY Brockport is a comprehensive undergraduate and graduate university, part of the 64-campus State University of New York System, located in the western New York region near Rochester. Flanagan begins his new duties July 1.

The vice president for academic affairs is the chief academic officer of the campus, and is responsible for leadership and planning for all academic programs.

During Flanagan's seven-year tenure at SHSU, the Criminal Justice Center has grown substantially. Under his leadership the Bill Blackwood Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas and the Correctional Management Institute of Texas were established. These organizations provide continuing professional education for police and correctional executives and managers, and bring more than $4 million in state funds to SHSU each year.

In the College of Criminal Justice, Flanagan led a comprehensive review and revision of degree programs, and developed or assisted in the development of several new programs, including the Ph.D. program in forensic clinical psychology, to begin fall 1998 in cooperation with the SHSU Psychology Department; a master's degree concentration in substance abuse counseling; and a master of science program in criminal justice to be offered at the Montgomery County University Center beginning fall 1998.

In addition, Flanagan oversaw the formation of undergraduate and graduate student advising centers in the College, and established a graduate scholarship endowment that stands at $850,000.

"SHSU is a fine university, and I've grown and learned a great deal from my years here," Flanagan said. "I look forward to the challenges and opportunities presented by a campus-wide leadership role."

Bobby K. Marks, Sam Houston president, praised Flanagan for his work at SHSU and wished him well in his new position.

"We congratulate Dean Flanagan on his new position of vice president for academic affairs at SUNY Brockport," said Marks. "The appointment is a most important one for his career. While we regret his loss to Sam Houston State University, we share his excitement about the new opportunities that await him at Brockport. He has served SHSU well, and I am confident he will be highly successful as vice president at SUNY Brockport."

David Payne, vice president for academic affairs at SHSU, said he has served with Flanagan for only a year, but was impressed with his work.

"Dr. Flanagan has provided distinguished leadership for the College of Criminal Justice and in the state and national criminal justice community," said Payne. "He will be missed at Sam Houston. We wish him well in his new challenge."

Paul Yu, president of SUNY Brockport, said that his institution was pleased to have attracted an administrator and scholar with Flanagan's qualifications.

"Tim has the credentials and expertise, as well as an impressive portfolio of results-oriented academic accomplishments to make a significant contribution to SUNY Brockport at this important turning point in the college's history," said Yu. "His track record of research and sponsored-fund awards, innovative curriculum development, motivational-leadership style, and his ability to recruit top-notch faculty--and students--make him an ideal complement to our administrative team."

Flanagan and his family will relocate to New York this summer. Flanagan's successor is expected to be named in a few weeks, after campus leaders confer with faculty and staff in the Criminal Justice Center.
