Orchestra To Perform
Masterworks Concert

On Saturday, March 28, the Sam Houston State University Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Carol Smith will perform its annual Masterworks Concert in the Killinger Auditorium of the Beto Criminal Justice Center at 7:30 p.m.

"The concert will feature the beautiful romantic Symphony No. 2 of Howard Hanson, the premiere performance of the viola concerto of SHSU's renowned emeritus Professor of Music Newton Standberg, and a prelude of Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich," said Smith. "We believe this will be an historic and enjoyable evening."

SHSU violin professor, Ljubomir Velickovic, will perform the Standberg viola concerto which was recently recorded by the Silesian Philharmonic Orchestras. The soloist for the recording is Karen Dreyfus, Tchaikovsky competition winner. The compact disc recording is scheduled to be released by Master Musicians Collective of Boston.

Strandberg retired from SHSU in May 1997, after a long and illustrious career of teaching theory and composition. He came to Sam Houston in 1967 after having taught at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, and Denison University in Ohio. He counts among his major teachers Nadia Boulanger, Anthony Donato, Henry Cowell and John Becker.

The duration of the concert is about one hour. Admission is $5 for adults and free to Friends of Music members and students with SHSU identification.
