Brigance Sixth After First RoundGinger Brigance, Sam Houston State University senior from Magnolia, was tied for sixth in the Women's Barrel Race event after the first round of the College National Finals Rodeo under way in Rapid City, S. D.Brigance's time of 12.44 seconds was less than a half second behind leader Tona Wright of Western Texas College, who ran the three-barrel course in just 12.13 seconds. Five Sam Houston students are competing in the event--four members of the Southern Regional championship women's team, and Trey Fisher, senior from Madisonville, who qualified in the bareback and men's all-around events. Women's team members in addition to Brigance include Ceslie Burton, junior from Trinity; Delana Collins, junior from Tomball; and Stephanie Cook, sophomore from Crockett. The format for the collegiate rodeo championships include three rounds of competition for each contestant, with the top 12 advancing to the final round on Saturday night. Sonny Sikes, who has coached SHSU rodeo teams since 1959, and Bobby K. Marks, Sam Houston president, are attending the national finals.
