Fisher Turns in High-Scoring Ride

Trey Fisher, Sam Houston State University senior from Madisonville, turned in one of the top rides in the Bareback Bronc Riding event at the College National Finals Rodeo Wednesday.

Fisher's effort was good enough for a tie for 5th in the second round of the competition being held in Rapid City, S. D. Fisher scored a 73, just four points behind the second round leader.

The top 12 finishers in the first three rounds of competition advance to the finals on Saturday night.

The National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association's College National Finals Rodeo is unusual, if not unique, in U. S. intercollegiate sports competition.

One unusual aspect is that junior and senior college teams and individuals compete equally. Western Texas College of Snyder, Texas, a junior college, was leading the women's team standings and was tied for 6th in the men's team standings after the first two rounds.

Another is that college rodeo performers are allowed to accept money from professional events and yet retain their collegiate eligibility. Trevor Brazile of West Texas A&M University, who was leading in the men's all-around competition after two rounds, is also currently in second place in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association all-around category.

Most unusual is the format for men's team roping, with competition by two-man teams of cowboys from competing colleges or universities. Brazile's partner in that event is Jason Stewart, from Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton, Ore.
