"Am I a Crook?'

Teleconference Explores Internet Copyright Issues

As more students, staff and faculty use the Internet for research, determining when downloaded material is copyrighted and when one may lawfully include certain materials in an online course or on web pages is increasingly difficult. This topic will be explored in a PBS teleconference slated for 1:30 to 3 p.m. April 2 in room C215 or the Criminal Justice Center.

The event is co-sponsored by the Newton Gresham Library and the College of Criminal Justice.

Issues addressed by the teleconference include:

  • Providing examples of legal and illegal uses of copyrighted material.
  • Using vignettes to illustrate potential violations.
  • Clarifying what kinds of material can and cannot be copied.
  • Discussing how much of a piece can be used.

Three authorities in intellectual property will sit on the panel.

  • Georgia Harper is manager of the Intellectural Property Section of the University of Texas System's Office of General Counsel. She has published "The Copyright Crash Course," a collection of articles, presentations and policy documents related to copyright in the university community.
  • Steven McDonald is an associate legal counsel at Ohio State University, where he is also an adjunct professor in the College of Law. He teaches a seminar on Electronic Communitys and Tort Law.
  • Janis Bruwelheide is a professor in the College of Education, Health and Human Development at Montana State University-Bozeman. She is author of "The Copyright Primer" and is recognized nationally as a presenter and authority in intellectual property matters for educators.

An on-line component will enable viewers to have input into the program and interact with each other before and after the live satelite event. The room seats 45 people. Contact the Newton Gresham Library at ext. 1613 or e-mail to make reservations.
