Mexican Field School Set For
Another Exciting Summer

During last summer's SHSU Puebla Field School students witnessed an eruption (albeit from afar) of nearby Popocatepetl, an active volcano.

This is how Carrie Womack, graduate business student, describes last summer's trip to Mexico as part of the Sam Houston State University Puebla Field School.

Last summer 54 students spent four weeks there in a revival of a program begun in 1944 and discontinued in 1976. Bobby K. Marks, SHSU president, re-instituted the program in 1997 to give SHSU students an international opportunity for study in a different culture.

The students took courses in international business, physical geology and Mexican history and culture. The courses were augmented by field trips to Mexican businesses, historical and archaeological sites and to Popocatepetl, an active volcano outside Puebla.

"It was the perfect way to make students aware of new Mexican-U. S. economic opportunities and our global society," said Ross Lovell, field school director.

Prominent Mexican businessmen served as guest speakers and gave the students valuable insights into doing business in Mexico City. Students took weekend trips to Acapulco, Veracruz, Oaxaca and Mexico City.

This summer the program offers seven courses in the first summer session, with departure June 7 and return July 3.

The courses are Drawing in Mexico (ART 493.01), Ceramics in Mexico (ART 493.02), Physical Geology (GEL 133/113), Intermediate Spanish (SPN 263.02), Mexican Civilization (SPN 470.01), Seminar in International Business (MGT 430.01/575.01) and Seminar in Global Supply Chain Management (MGT 430.02/575.02).

The field school is located in Puebla, Mexico, a Spanish colonial city established in 1531. It is the fourth largest city in Mexico and is located on the high plains, 75 miles east and south of Mexico City. Puebla mixes elaborate colonial architecture and an active arts community with a modern business and industrial sector.

Classes will be taught by SHSU faculty members at an elegant historic hotel one block from the main plaza in downtown Puebla. Cost for the program is $1140, which includes round-trip airfare, hotel room, and 36 meals. Tuition cost is additional and depends on the number of hours taken.
