Sports Update For Week Of Oct. 15

FOOTBALL

Senior All-American wide receiver MATT DOMINGUEZ set new Sam Houston State school records with 11 catches for 224 yards pass receiving and CHRIS FOSTER returned a kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown to top the list of big plays in an exciting 52-41 victory as Sam Houston State spoiled 24th-ranked Stephen F. Austin's Homecoming.

On a picture perfect fall afternoon, the two teams combined for 93 points and 1,019 yards total offense in the highest scoring game ever in the "Battle of the Piney Woods" series between SHSU and SFA. The victory upped Sam Houston State's season record to 5-1, the Bearkats' best start since 1994, and gave the Kats their second consecutive Southland Football League victory. SHSU has been 2-0 only once before in their 14 years in the Southland, and that was in 1991 when the Bearkats were SFL co-champions with McNeese State.

Dominguez broke Clay Lowry's single game record of 10 catches for 211 yards set against East Texas in 1978. Dominguez's performance included touchdown catches of 73 and 39 yards. Saturday's numbers made Dominguez the first Southland Football League player ever to total 200 career receptions and gain more than 3,000 yards receiving. His career totals now stand at 200 catches for 3,164 yards and 27 touchdowns. Following the contest, Dominguez was named Southland Football League "Offensive Player of the Week."

Sam Houston jumped in front of the Lumberjecks with leads of 17-0 and 24-7. But SFA jumped out in front 27-24 just before halftime to take momentum into the locker room. Chris Foster returned the second half opening kickoff 91 yards behind an excellent block by Kevin Mohr, the first time a Bearkat has returned a kickoff for a touchdown since Davey Smith went 94 yards for a TD at Southeast Missouri in 1993.

Senior quarterback ALBERT BRADLEY completed 17 of 25 passes for 289 yards and four touchdowns. JERMAINE HENDERSON had the other two scoring catches. Free safety KEITH DAVIS came up with the two biggest defensive plays of the game, picking off two Lumberjack passes to stop late SFA offensive rallies.

Sam Houston State returns home this Saturday to play host to defending Southland Football League champion Troy State in a 7 p.m. game at Bowers Stadium.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Sam Houston State women's cross country team had an outstanding meet Saturday in College Station, placing third in the Texas A&M Invitational. Texas A&M won the meet with 21 points, followed by Rice 85, and SHSU 96. The Bearkats finished ahead of Houston, Texas, Texas-San Antonio, North Texas, Louisiana-Lafayette, and Northwestern State.

Kacey Phillips was the top individual finisher for the SHSU women with a sixth place time of 18 minutes, 30 seconds in the 5,000 meter race. Other top Bearkat finishers were Holly Pitzenberger (15th, 19:13); Karina Mancias (16th, 19:16), Ebony Brown (28th, 19:53); and Jennifer Engelbrink (31st, 19:59).

The Sam Houston State men placed sixth out of 12 teams in the men's five-mile event. Christian Hurtado was the Bearkats' top finisher with a 13th place time of 26:53. Other Bearkat finishes included Raul Villarreal (23rd, 27:22); Rusty Stover (37th, 27:51), Tony Vining (42nd, 28:02); and Daniel Massingill (47th, 28:29).

WOMEN'S TENNIS

The young Sam Houston State tennis team had their second outstanding fall tournament performance in two weeks as the Bearkats placed third in the ten-team field at the Stephen F. Austin Intercollegiate Friday and Saturday. The Bearkats finished ahead of three of the four other Southland Conference teams in the event and won two of their three head-to-head matches with the only SLC school that placed ahead of them, SFA.

Sam Houston State's top four singles players - Ivette Andrade, Kim Gardiner, Kristen Wooten, and Stephanie Sutton -- all reached the quarterfinals of the championship singles in their respective flights. Andrade was the fourth place finisher in the number one singles flights.

The Bearkats were successful in doubles as well as both SHSU's number one and number two doubles teams reached the third place finals of their respective flights.

VOLLEYBALL

Sam Houston State picked up its second Southland Conference victory of the 2000 season Friday night, defeating Louisiana-Monroe 15-4 15-11 13-15 15-10. Liz Dahlstrom led the Bearkats with 18 kills and 14 digs.

This week, the Bearkats travel to Texas-Arlington on Tuesday, then play host to McNeese State at 7 p.m. Thursday and Lamar at 2 p.m. Saturday at Johnson Coliseum.
