Sports Update For Week Of Oct. 22
FOOTBALL
Sam Houston State will face 17th ranked McNeese State Saturday at 2 p.m. in the annual Bearkat Homecoming game. The
match-up brings together two teams tied for second place in the Southland Football League standings.
The Bearkats, ranked 22nd nationally in I-AA football last week, fell to 10th ranked Troy State last Saturday in Huntsville.
Mistakes in the kicking game, normally a Bearkat strength, cost SHSU dearly. The Bearkats missed three field goals and
allowed kickoff returns of 95 and 58 yards to give the Trojans both their touchdowns.
Quarterback Albert Bradley passed for 247 yards and a touchdown and ran for a second score. The Bearkats produced
their sixth punt block in seven games this year late in the third quarter when Keith Davis blocked a Troy State punt at the
21-yard line and his younger brother, DeJuan Davis, picked up the ball at the seven yard line and ran it in to cut the Troy
State margin to 16-14.
The Bearkat defense played an outstanding game, limiting Troy State to just 205 total yards.
CROSS COUNTRY
Kacey Phillips of Sam Houston State was named Southland Conference Women's Cross Country "Runner of the Week" last
week after her fifth place individual finish led the Bearkats to a third place finish at the Texas A&M Invitational.
VOLLEYBALL
Sam Houston State women's volleyball team dropped two close Southland Conference matches at home last week, falling
in four games to McNeese State on Thursday and to Lamar Saturday afternoon. The Bearkats travel to Nicholls State and
Southeastern Louisiana this week.
GOLF
The Sam Houston State men's golf team wraps up fall competition this Wednesday and Thursday at the Greg May Honda
Classic hosted by Baylor University in Waco.
Last week, the Bearkats placed fourth at the SFA Crown Classic. Freshman Jon Antunes placed eighth individually with a
148 and senior Doug Sinitierre was 11th with a 149.
The SHSU women's golf team completed its fall schedule with a ninth place finish at the Arkansas-Little Rock Invitational.
Vicky Resnick was the top women's golf finisher with a sixth place 220.
