Sports Update For Week Of Oct. 29

FOOTBALL

Despite back-to-back losses to NCAA Division I-AA nationally ranked football teams, the Sam Houston State Bearkats still are in the thick of the Southland Football League race for the 2000 season. Six of the league's eight teams are log-jammed at the top of the standings all within one game of each other. Northwestern State, McNeese State, Troy State, and Southwest Texas are tied for first place with 3-1 league marks. Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin are right behind with 2-2 records.

The Bearkats finish the season by traveling to Nicholls State this Saturday, Northwestern State on Nov. 11, then hosting Southwest Texas State in the season finale on Nov. 18. Only once in SFL history has a team won the league with two losses on its Southland slate. That was Sam Houston State in 1991 when the Bearkats and McNeese State were co-champions.

Two first quarter turnovers put Sam Houston State down 14-0 and number 21 ranked McNeese State kept the pressure on the rest of the way with a solid running game as the Cowboys spoiled SHSU Homecoming with a 31-17 victory last Saturday. Back-up quarterback Brian Null scored both Sam Houston State touchdowns and Alex St. Peter added a 46-yard field goal.

Jonnathon Cooper, junior wide receiver from LaMarque, became only the 11th Bearkat in history to gain more than 1,000 yards in his SHSU career receiving. Cooper has now caught 89 passes for 1,010 yards and six touchdowns.

CROSS COUNTRY Both the Sam Houston State men's and women's cross country teams will be in action Monday morning at the 27th annual Southland Conference Cross Country Championships hosted by Stephen F. Austin University in Lufkin.

VOLLEYBALL

The Sam Houston State women's volleyball team continues a Louisiana road swing this week, playing Wednesday at Louisiana Tech, Thursday at Louisiana-Monroe, and Friday at Northwestern State. The SHSU volleyball team's next home match is Tuesday, Nov. 7, against Texas Christian University.

TENNIS

The Bearkat women's tennis team will complete its fall season Friday by traveling to the annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Southwestern Regional Championships hosted by Texas A&M University. The tournament will feature the top 128 singles players and 64 doubles teams from NCAA Division I women's programs in Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas, all competing for individual berths in the ITA National Indoor Championships this winter. Representing Sam Houston State will be Ivette Andrade, Kristin Wooten, Stephanie Sutton, and Kim Gardiner.

GOLF

The Sam Houston State men's golf team completes its fall schedule this week by traveling to Waco for the Greg May/Honda Classic hosted by Baylor University. Freshman Jon Antunes leads the Bearkats this fall, having posted three top ten individual finishes in his first four tournaments this year.
