Sports Update For Week Of Oct. 8
BEARKATS POST VICTORY AT JACKSONVILLE STATE
Freshman Alex St. Peter kicked a 27-yard field goal with 40 seconds remaining to give Sam Houston State a come from behind 26-23 victory in the Bearkats' 2000 Southland Football League opener in Jacksonville, Ala., Saturday afternoon. The victory upped Sam Houston's season record to 4-1, the Bearkats' best season start since they were 5-0 in 1994. Albert Bradley led the Bearkat offense, passing for 201 yards and one touchdown and rushing for 77 yards and another score.
Sam Houston State's punt defense special team produced its fifth punt block in as many games this season in the game's biggest play early in the second quarter. With SHSU trailing 10-0, P. J. Traylor blocked a punt and Keith Davis picked up the ball at the 12-yard line and ran in for the score. St. Peter kicked a 43-yard field goal with no time remaining in the half to tie the score 10-10.
The Bearkat offense rolled up 16 points in the fourth quarter after Jacksonville State took a 17-10 lead in the third. Bradley directed an 84-yard drive that climaxed with a 25-yard Bradley to Jermaine Henderson touchdown pass to tie the score 17-17. After a failed fake punt by JSU, Bradley hit Jaron Dabney on a 50-yard screen pass. Then Bradley scored from the one-yard line to put SHSU up 23-17. But the extra point attempt was wide. When Jacksonville scored to tie the game 23-23 with 6:03 remaining, Kevin Mohr blocked the Gamecocks' extra point to keep the game deadlocked. Facing third down and 14 from his own 16-yard line, Bradley turned a busted play into a 50-yard gain as he passed to Henderson again. That set up the winning field goal by St. Peter.
Following the game, Bradley was named Southland Football League "Offensive Player of the Week."
