Update For Week Of Jan. 13
Planning Experts To Open
House For Master Plan Input
Sam Houston State University students, faculty and staff
will have the opportunity to voice their opinions on the direction
the university should head in terms of construction during
a second campus master plan open house on Jan. 22.
The informal session will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in
the Lowman Student Center Mall Area.
Participants will be asked to identify issues regarding parking,
vehicular and pedestrian circulation, buildings and facilities,
open space, and the surrounding community.
The input received will aid the consultant team in identifying
issues important to the university community, according to
John McCroskey, associate director for the Physical Plant.
“We’re trying to get a vision so we’re not
surprising the (Texas State University Board of) Regents every
time we turn around,” he said. “It tells us in
ballpark numbers what the budget needs to be for the next
10 years.”
The plan will be submitted by campus planning specialists
JJR, which will establish a 10-year plan with a 20-year look
ahead, McCroskey said.
The process is anticipated to be completed by July, in time
for the TSUS Board of Regents meeting in August.
SHSU’s current master plan was established in 2000.
According to McCroskey, the current plan didn’t anticipate
the enrollment surge the university has undergone in the past
few years, and everything that could be done with it has already
been completed.

Students Receive Funding
For Africa Project
SHSU biology graduate student Tim Campbell and senior Kelly
Forson have been awarded $1,000 Sigma Xi Grant-in-Aid of Research
funding that will aid in travel to Africa this summer.
The two will be a part of a team coordinated by biology assistant
professor Patrick Lewis that will study deposits at an excavation
site in Africa’s Free State Province with the Meloding
Railway Cut and explore a cave in Botswana with the Botswana
National Museum and Botswana Defense Force.
The team will be in Africa from May to mid-to-late July, according
to Lewis.
“That is one of the unique things here – many
students can pay large fees to be a part of a field school
for a few weeks, but not many get to participate in a professional
excavation, particularly as undergraduates,” he said.
“My research is looking broadly at how the environment
of Southern Africa has changed during the last 2 million years
to better understand how our ancestors were adapting and evolving
in the region.”
During the project, the students will be “basically
looking at some aspect of this rather broad question.”
Campbell will research the distribution of fossil mammals
in order to better understand how the southern African environment
has changed, while Forson will compare insects and other invertebrates
from inside a “basically unexplored” cave with
their relatives outside the cave to study their differences.
While Lewis’ project grants cover all the necessary
equipment, travel within Africa and living expenses, students
are responsible for their airfare to get there, which is what
the grant money will be used for.
The two will also apply for other funding in order to offset
expenses not covered by the Sigma Xi grant.

May Graduation
Applications Due Soon
Students who anticipate graduating in May are to file degree
applications by Feb. 1 with the Registrar’s Office.
The new mandatory academic advisement policy now allows students
to apply for graduation by the 12th class day of the semester
in which they are anticipating graduation; therefore, students
are being encouraged to apply as early as possible.
Those who fail to apply by the deadline will be assessed a
$25 late application fee in addition to the $25 graduation
fee.
Applying late may also result in names not appearing in the
commencement program or the honors program.
Final exams will be held May 12-15, with a study day scheduled
for May 9, and commencement is scheduled for May 16-17.
