SHSU
Update For Week Of Jan. 20
Events To SWAAT At Alcohol,
Drug Abuse
The Alcohol and Drug Abuse Initiative will give students
tips on how to bide time without the substances and compare
calories in drinks during two events beginning Thursday (Jan.
24).
From noon to 1 p.m. on that day, the ADAI will ask students
to think about how they spend their days with “What’s
Your Time Worth” in Lowman Student Center Room 302.
During the event, students will learn positive relaxation
strategies to cope with the stress of college life without
the use of alcohol or drugs and make a personalized “time
inventory.”
“Students can make a schedule of where all of their
time goes, which will help them find hours in the day with
which they can be doing things that are productive and more
useful to help them in academics,” said Lisa Joyner,
ADAI assistant.
“A lot of students don't use their time wisely so we
want to make sure they know they may be wasting hours in the
day,” she said.
The ADAI will test students’ knowledge of which has
more calories, cheeseburgers or a few beers, on Jan. 30, from
noon to 3 p.m. in the LSC Mall area.
“The Cheeseburger Challenge illustrates just how fattening
the wrong ‘liquid’ diet can be,” Joyner
said.
In the event of rain, the activity will be held in LSC Room
302.
Both events are part of the Six Weeks of Alcohol Awareness
Training program, an educational series aiming to increase
awareness of alcohol abuse issues among the Bearkat community.
Through SWAAT, students earn prizes by attending events, which
accumulate as students attend more programs.
Class rosters will be available during the week for course
registration, and SWAAT participation can be listed on co-curricular
transcripts.
For more information, or a complete schedule of events for
the semester, visit the ADAI Web site at www.shsu.edu/adai
or contact Rosanne
Keathley, ADAI coordinator, at 936.294.1171.

Art To Showcase Faculty, Tech
Students In Exhibits
The art department will feature the works of its faculty
members, as well as provide some “High Plains Drama,”
with two exhibits beginning Monday (Jan. 21).
The 48th Annual Faculty Exhibition, in the Gaddis Geeslin
Gallery through Feb. 7, will showcase a wide variety of pieces,
including paintings, drawings, ceramics, sculptures, printmaking,
photography and animation, according to art department audio/visual
librarian Debbie Davenport.
“This is a great opportunity for students to see the
work of their professors,” she said.
Three graduate students from Texas Tech University will also
display their large-scale works using different photographic
techniques in "High Plains Drama," through Feb.
7 in the Students of Fine Arts Gallery.
In Brianna Burnett’s work, she produces silhouettes
that create narratives about herself through the arrangement
of “photograms,” images made without a camera
by placing things in front of light sensitive paper and exposing
it to light, according to associate art professor Michael
Henderson.
Angelica Munoz stages scenes and photographs using film and
traditional photographic techniques, breaking from tradition
by photographing the scenes from multiple views and then piecing
the many photographs together to create a large scene with
numerous points of view.
Chisum Pierce also stages scenes and produces large images
that include himself and other characters in unexpected dramatic
situations.
The three will visit SHSU later in the semester to talk about
their work and the Master of Fine Arts program at Texas Tech.
A reception for both exhibits will be held on Thursday (Jan.
24), from 5-7 p.m.
The Gaddis Geeslin Gallery is located in the SHSU Art Complex
Building F, and the SOFA Gallery is located in Art Complex
Building A.
For more information or gallery hours, call the art
department at 936.294.1317 or visit www.shsu.edu/~art_www/gallery.html.
