SHSU Update For Week Of Jan. 20

Events To SWAAT At Alcohol, Drug Abuse

The Alcohol and Drug Abuse Initiative will give students tips on how to bide time without the substances and compare calories in drinks during two events beginning Thursday (Jan. 24).

From noon to 1 p.m. on that day, the ADAI will ask students to think about how they spend their days with “What’s Your Time Worth” in Lowman Student Center Room 302.

During the event, students will learn positive relaxation strategies to cope with the stress of college life without the use of alcohol or drugs and make a personalized “time inventory.”

“Students can make a schedule of where all of their time goes, which will help them find hours in the day with which they can be doing things that are productive and more useful to help them in academics,” said Lisa Joyner, ADAI assistant.

“A lot of students don't use their time wisely so we want to make sure they know they may be wasting hours in the day,” she said.

The ADAI will test students’ knowledge of which has more calories, cheeseburgers or a few beers, on Jan. 30, from noon to 3 p.m. in the LSC Mall area.

“The Cheeseburger Challenge illustrates just how fattening the wrong ‘liquid’ diet can be,” Joyner said.

In the event of rain, the activity will be held in LSC Room 302.

Both events are part of the Six Weeks of Alcohol Awareness Training program, an educational series aiming to increase awareness of alcohol abuse issues among the Bearkat community.

Through SWAAT, students earn prizes by attending events, which accumulate as students attend more programs.

Class rosters will be available during the week for course registration, and SWAAT participation can be listed on co-curricular transcripts.

For more information, or a complete schedule of events for the semester, visit the ADAI Web site at www.shsu.edu/adai or contact Rosanne Keathley, ADAI coordinator, at 936.294.1171.

Service Award Nominations Due Feb. 1

The SHSU Alumni Association is seeking graduates, faculty, staff, administrators and friends who have “made significant contributions to Sam Houston State University” for its annual Service Awards.

Nominations are due by Feb. 1.

Nominees will be judged according to their contributions toward the advancement of SHSU, as well as to society, according to the nomination form. As many as six awards will be presented.

In addition, recipients must be able to attend the award ceremony, which will be held on April 18 in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom.

The Alumni Association presents the Service Award to individuals who demonstrate a continued interest in the university and/or Alumni Association through their contributions of time, talent, influence, and/or funds, said director for Alumni Relations Charlie Vienne.

“These individuals must exude pride and loyalty of the Sam Houston State University motto ‘The measure of a Life is its Service,’” he said.

Nomination forms can be found online at http://alumni.shsu.edu/~alu_kat/awards/nominations.html and should be returned, along with support documents, to Sam Houston State University Office of Alumni Relations, Box 2022, Huntsville, Texas, 77341-2022.

Retirement Party To Honor Bumpass

The university community will have the opportunity to say goodbye to President’s Office administrative coordinator Cheryl Bumpass during her retirement party on Jan. 28.

The event will be held from 1-2:30 p.m. on that day in Austin Hall.

“Sam Houston State University has afforded me a wonderful career of almost 23 years and a great education. I will always bleed orange,” she said. “Also it has enabled me to make many good friends over the years that I will miss seeing on a daily basis.”

Bumpass earned her Bachelor of Business Administration degree from SHSU in 1994.

During her 22 years with the university, she also worked as a secretary in the College of Education.

Bumpass’ immediate retirement plans include golf lessons so she can play the sport with her husband Don, spending time with family, remodeling her home and traveling, among other things, she said.

“Don will keep teaching economics here a few more years, but now when the faculty are off, I will be also free to travel with him more,” she said.

Bumpass’ last day is on Jan. 31.

For more information on the retirement reception, call the President’s Office at 936.294.1013.

Rec Sports To Introduce ‘That Fitness Thang’

Recreational Sports will facilitate those students, faculty and staff who resolved to get in shape in the New Year with “That Fitness Thang” on Wednesday (Jan. 23).

The event will be held from 6-8 p.m. in the Health and Kinesiology Center’s Multi-purpose Room No. 1.

“That Fitness Thang,” previously called Aerojam, will highlight the Rec Sports spring 2008 group fitness schedule, as well as promote wellness, according to Mindy Oden, Rec Sports assistant director for wellness programs.

“Each group fitness instructor will teach a 20-minute segment of his/her class,” she said. “There will also be booths with wellness information, food and giveaways.”

Spring group fitness classes began Jan. 16.

Art To Showcase Faculty, Tech Students In Exhibits

The art department will feature the works of its faculty members, as well as provide some “High Plains Drama,” with two exhibits beginning Monday (Jan. 21).

The 48th Annual Faculty Exhibition, in the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery through Feb. 7, will showcase a wide variety of pieces, including paintings, drawings, ceramics, sculptures, printmaking, photography and animation, according to art department audio/visual librarian Debbie Davenport.

“This is a great opportunity for students to see the work of their professors,” she said.

Three graduate students from Texas Tech University will also display their large-scale works using different photographic techniques in "High Plains Drama," through Feb. 7 in the Students of Fine Arts Gallery.

In Brianna Burnett’s work, she produces silhouettes that create narratives about herself through the arrangement of “photograms,” images made without a camera by placing things in front of light sensitive paper and exposing it to light, according to associate art professor Michael Henderson.

Angelica Munoz stages scenes and photographs using film and traditional photographic techniques, breaking from tradition by photographing the scenes from multiple views and then piecing the many photographs together to create a large scene with numerous points of view.

Chisum Pierce also stages scenes and produces large images that include himself and other characters in unexpected dramatic situations.

The three will visit SHSU later in the semester to talk about their work and the Master of Fine Arts program at Texas Tech.

A reception for both exhibits will be held on Thursday (Jan. 24), from 5-7 p.m.

The Gaddis Geeslin Gallery is located in the SHSU Art Complex Building F, and the SOFA Gallery is located in Art Complex Building A.

For more information or gallery hours, call the art department at 936.294.1317 or visit www.shsu.edu/~art_www/gallery.html.
