Festival To Rock Huntsville For Charities

Ben Gonzales
The Ben Gonzales Memorial Music Festival, hosted by the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity, is held in honor of the former fraternity brother who died in an automobile accident in 2006.

SHSU’s Kappa Alpha Order will mix country and rock with a little bit of the blues for four charities on Saturday (April 12) during the second annual Ben Gonzales Memorial Music Festival.

Houston’s Run Over Twice will kick off the eight performances slated for the fundraising event at 4 p.m. at the square in downtown Huntsville, on the corner of 12th street and University Avenue.

Other performances scheduled throughout the day include an acoustic jam session featuring Raye Gonzales, Orlando Velasco and Jake Honeycutt, from 5-5:45 p.m.; Fort Worth’s Meander, from 6-6:45 p.m., and The Relatives, from 7-7:45 p.m.; San Marcos’ Centre St. Blues Band, from 8-8:45 p.m.; and Plano’s Nick Adams, from 9-9:45 p.m.

Huntsville bands Pledge Defiance and Rosenwall will end the evening with concerts from 10-10:45 p.m. and 11 p.m. to midnight, respectively.

“We are proud that we feature country, rock and blues so everyone can enjoy the music,” said Tim Jeske, Kappa Alpha member and concert committee chair.

The family-friendly and alcohol-free event will also include a number of children’s activities such as a free moonwalk for children to play on during the performances, according to Jeske.

In addition, KA will sell barbecue plates for $4 each.

Festival proceeds will benefit four charities, including the Muscular Dystrophy Association, The SAAFE House, the Rainbow Room of the Walker County CPS board, and a scholarship established this year in memory of Gonzales, a member of the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity who died in an automobile accident in 2006.

“The Kappa Alpha Order looks to make this event a yearly staple in community and strives to keep itself aligned with the university’s motto, ‘The measure of a Life is its Service,’” Jeske said.

Jeske said approximately 500 people attended last year’s event, and they are anticipating as many as 2,000 this year.

Tickets are $5 and can be purchased in advance by calling Jeske at 254.205.9706 or through the Huntsville Mainstreet Office, at 1203 University Ave., and can also be purchased at the door.
