Sam To Host First Music Festival

Sam Houston State University’s Student Activities and Recreational Sports departments are joining together to present the first Sammypalooza music festival on Aug. 24 at the Johnson Coliseum.

The festival will feature nine musical performances including Lifehouse, Jack Ingram and Story of the Year, an “Eats N Beats” area, two outdoor stages and other activities.
The festival is part of Welcome Week and is open to the SHSU community free of charge. Tickets for the concert featuring headliner performances are free of charge to any member of the SHSU community with their Bearkat OneCard and $20 for non-SHSU affiliates.

“We want Sammypalooza to entertain students and the SHSU community in a fun and safe environment,” said Brandon Cooper, assistant director for Student Activities. “From smaller bands to well know performers, with a food fair and departmental showcase, Sammypalooza offers something for music lovers of all kinds, as well as first-time concert goers.”

Two stages will be on the Johnson Coliseum patio where performances by Tim Qualls, Versecity, Clairmont and Chalie Boy will begin at 3 p.m. Each band will perform for 20 minutes on orange and white stages.

“The Sammypalooza committee has invited Huntsville food vendors to take part in our ‘Eats N Beats’ area,” said Tina De Ases, senior assistant director of SHSU Recreational Sports. “The vendors will bring students bite size samples of their food. In addition to food, we will have student organizations, SHSU booths, and various activities for attendees to participate in.”

Food vendors will include the Farmhouse Café, Tinsley's Chicken, Bandera Grill and McKenzie's BBQ.

SHSU fitness and the SHSU Public Safety Service office will host activities in the outdoor segment, and the ROTC will provide a rock-climbing wall.

The Johnson Coliseum doors open at 6 p.m. for concert seating. The show begins at 7 p.m. and concludes at 11 p.m., allowing each band to play for approximately one hour.

“This is the first time we have ever had an event of this magnitude,” said De Ases. “We have brought in big bands to the coliseum, but this is the first live music festival with the big name bands also appearing. We would love for this to become an annual event.”

"We are so excited about Sammypalooza,” Cooper said. “This is a new program for the university that we feel will entertain students. It's been a long time since the university has hosted a ‘big name’ performer, not to mention the first time we have ever hosted a series of them on the same evening at the same program. This is going to be a great event.”

Music at the concert is intended for adult audiences. Tickets may be reserved online.

Volunteers are still needed to help in various capacities.
