Gibson To Address State Of University Sept. 2
Dana Gibson will deliver her first speech as Sam Houston State University president as she addresses faculty and staff during the annual general assembly on Thursday (Sept. 2).
The “state-of-the-campus” meeting will be at 2 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center Concert Hall.
In addition to her message, Gibson will recognize staff excellence award recipients, as well as service award recipients in five-year increments beginning at 20 years.
A meet-and-greet reception with the new president will follow.
Tailgate Parties To ‘Rush’ Bearkat Fans To Away Games
The Sam Houston State University Alumni Association will go on the road with the Bearkats, tailgating at three away games this season.
The association will travel to Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco for SHSU’s first game of the season versus Baylor on Sept. 4. Pre-game tailgating will be held from 4 p.m. until kickoff, at 6 p.m.
Tickets to tailgate are $10 per person, which will provide Bearkat fans with fajitas and two drink tickets. The Baylor tailgate is sponsored by alumni Sammy Cintrano, Jim and Judy Haller, Bud Haney, John and Nancy Hoyt, and Larry Lynch.
The reservation deadline is Sept. 2.
“If you are a sports fan, you know that road games are the toughest to win, due to lack of crowd support and your team being in adverse conditions,” said Charlie Vienne, director for Alumni Relations. “The Alumni Association is trying to generate greater Bearkat attendance at these away contests to level the playing field for our Bearkats.
“The more fans and noise we can make will hopefully give our guys the extra edge they need to pull out a win,” he said.
Other away-game tailgate parties that are scheduled for the season include SHSU versus Lamar in Beaumont on Oct. 2 and the "Battle of the Piney Woods” game at Reliant Stadium in Houston on Oct. 23.
The cost for the Lamar tailgate will also be $10 per person, and there will be no charge for the Battle of the Piney Woods tailgate party.
“The Alumni Association is reaching out to alumni, students and friends of the university to bring everyone together for one common cause, their love of SHSU and support of the Bearkats,” Vienne said. “We want to provide a family atmosphere with high energy and excitement for individuals of all ages.”

Fair To Help Students Find On-Campus Jobs
Career Services will provide students with a one-stop shop to find a part-time job during the on-campus job fair on Monday (Aug. 23).
Fifteen departments will be set up in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to discuss student assistant positions they are currently seeking.
These include the SHSU Annual Fund, Athletics, Career Services, the health and kinesiology department, ARAMARK, Enrollment Management, foreign languages, Information Resources, the Newton Gresham Library, the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, Public Safety Services, Recreational Sports, the Houstonian and the SHSU Writing Center. The Financial Aid office and the Office of International Programs will be there to offer student support.
On-campus jobs are beneficial to students because they offer great hours, a great working environment and flexible scheduling, according to Paige Loft, Career Services job fair and special events coordinator.
“A huge benefit that I don’t think people talk about enough, but it was important to me, is when I graduated and I started this job here, I already had longevity with the state (as a former student assistant),” she said. “It’s a state job, so if you go to work for any other state agency, you have longevity and vacation time accrued.
“We had 500 students attend the fair last time we had it, so departments get very high visibility,” she said.
Students can log on to Jobs 4 Kats on the Career Services Web site to see which positions are available from each participating department. On the day of the event, students should bring a completed State of Texas application and a copy of their fall class schedule and are encouraged to bring copies of their resume.
In addition, students can find out if they are eligible for the work-study program at the fair.

Alumni To Welcome Faculty, Staff With Party
The Office of Alumni Relations will round up faculty and staff members on Tuesday (Aug. 31) for its annual Party on the Patio.
The cowboy-themed “welcome back” for SHSU employees will be held from 4-6 p.m. on the Alumni Patio of the John R. Ragsdale Visitor and Alumni Center, located at the corner of the Estill Building and University Avenue.
Appetizers and drinks will be served, including mini chicken diablo, mini chipolte beef empanadas, poblano chicken and cheese quesadillas, and a special “cactus cooler” drink.
“Party on the Patio is a great way for faculty and staff to visit and socialize as well as being a welcome mat for new faculty and staff,” said Charlie Vienne, director for Alumni Relations. “We feel it is important to give newcomers to campus an opportunity to visit with our older more established faculty and staff to make new friendships and learn a little about some of the campus traditions.”
During the event, attendees will be given the opportunity to become members of the Alumni Association for a reduced fee of $25.
“Although not the primary purpose of the event, we do provide the opportunity for all faculty and staff to become members of the Alumni Association regardless of whether they received their degree from SHSU,” Vienne said. “Membership in the Alumni Association is available to friends of the university and is a great way for faculty and staff to show their support for Sam Houston and keep up-to-date on campus activities and events.”

‘True Merit’ Of SHSU Fraternity Recognized

SHSU’s Alpha Tau Omega fraternity was recognized for its “True Merit” during the organization’s national awards ceremony, held in Orlando, Fla., on Aug. 7.
“The True Merit cup is awarded to the chapters that achieve a very high and effective level of operations, excel at recruitment, community and campus involvement and who’s members embody true merit and high level of excellence in their daily activities,” said Brandon Cooper, ATO chapter adviser and assistant director for Student Activities.
This is the first time the chapter has won the award since its establishment on the SHSU campus in 1960. It is presented to the top chapters in the U.S., with 27 out 138 chapters receiving the award this year.
Chapter president Price Howard accepted the award in front of the more than 700 people in attendance and the thousands watching live online while the Bearkat fight song played in the background.
"We have worked so hard as a chapter to achieve this award and represent not only our chapter but SHSU in a positive light,” Howard said. “We have some amazing guys that are truly upstanding students here at SHSU. I am so proud to be part of ATO.”
The chapter also recognized as the “Outstanding Social Fraternity” at this year’s Sammy Awards banquet and is celebrating their 50th year on campus.
The current chapter has 48 members who are involved in other organizations on campus such as Interfraternity Council, Lambda Alpha Epsilon, Order of Omega as well as close partners with United Way of Walker County.
"The university and I are so proud and delighted for ATO,” Cooper said. “This truly is an amazing accomplishment for both them as a chapter and SHSU for having them as an organization here."
NGL Tutorial Gets PRIMO Acceptance
The Newton Gresham Library's new online Information Literacy tutorial has been accepted into the Peer-Reviewed Instructional Materials Online project and added to the PRIMO database.
The tutorial was created by librarians Lynn McMain (head of reference), Erin Cassidy, Susan Strickland, Lisa Shen, and James Britsch to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of research and guide them through the research process, according to Erin Cassidy, assistant professor and reference librarian. It is found at http://library.shsu.edu/research/guides/tutorials/graded/infolit/index.html.
“PRIMO is a peer-reviewed database where educators can access high-quality instructional materials created by librarians to teach information literacy and library research topics,” Cassidy said. “Having a tutorial accepted into PRIMO means it is recognized by the American Library Association as an exemplary example of teaching material, and it is made publicly available to other educators.”
PRIMO is a committee of the American Library Association—the main organization that also gives accreditation to library schools—and the Association of College and Research Libraries. The project’s database is located at http://www.ala.org/apps/primo/public/search.cfm.
