Sam Houston State University’s Dean of Students’ Office will provide parents and siblings with a fun and memorable experience with their SHSU student on campus during Bearkat Family Weekend on Sept. 24-26.
“Bearkat Family Weekend is a way to bring together the entire campus community to showcase to our Bearkat families what SHSU is all about,” said Kimberly Spradlin, the program coordinator in the Dean of Student’s Office.
The weekend events will begin on Sept. 24 at the Visitor Center with campus tours.
Families may check-in on Sept. 25. They will then have the opportunity to mingle with administrators and get familiar with the departments, SHSU Alumni Association and honors program, as well as attend activities sponsored by the departments at the Carnival on the Concourse.
“This year’s theme is a Bearkat fiesta,” Spradlin said. “Our catered lunch on Saturday will include beef and/or chicken fajitas, Spanish rice, ranchero beans, flour tortillas and chips.”
There will be a Classic Car Cruise-In and tailgating at Bowers Stadium before the SHSU vs. Gardner Webb football game.
Tickets for the game are to be purchased separately at the gate or in advance through the Athletics Department.
“Families may participate in the pre-game march to the stadium,” Spradlin said. “Military displays and ceremonies will be featured at the game as well as an appearance by the Houston Texans Cheerleaders and a post-game fireworks show.”
The weekend will conclude on Sept. 26 with an interdenominational Christian worship service in the Farrington Pit.
The price for Bearkat Family Weekend is $10 per family member and $5 for SHSU students, which includes a T-shirt, continental breakfast at the Coffee with Administrators, a catered lunch, Carnival on the Concourse, tailgating and the Classic Car Show. Families may register online through Sept. 3.
“We hope to register 2,100 to 2,300 participants,” Spradlin said. “Last year we had 2,084 registered participants with the largest campus-wide involvement. We are looking forward to the continued growth that this program sees.
“Families enjoyed a fun-filled weekend with their students during previous Bearkat Family Weekends,” she said. “They developed a stronger connection to the university as well. I hope that they take with them an even greater peace that their student made the right decision when choosing SHSU to further their education.”
