To the University Community:
The President’s Cabinet met first thing this morning to discuss the events that took place on campus Friday afternoon. The situation has given us a unique opportunity to evaluate our response to a potential critical situation.
First and foremost, the safety of our students, faculty and staff is, and will continue to be, our highest priority. The report we received of a possible gunman on campus was taken very seriously from the beginning and handled well throughout the process.
Early in the emergency it was determined there was a high probability the guns were actually Nerf toys. In response to the many questions regarding the deployment of the KatSafe system, we are developing a faster method of communication for rapidly-evolving types of emergencies, such as web page updates, social media, and a loudspeaker system. In this instance, the available information was changing faster than KatSafe could disseminate.
As a university community we are fortunate that this very real but benign incident has served to provide us with opportunities for improvement and strengthening our communication for the future.
I would like to commend the faculty, staff and students for responding admirably to the situation.
Sincerely,
Dana Gibson
President
