Regents Approve College Reorganization

Sam Houston State University will add a College of Fine Arts and Mass Communication to its academic structure following approval by the university’s governing body on Friday.

The Texas State University System Board of Regents authorized the college at its quarterly meeting Aug. 19-20 on the SHSU campus.

The regents approved the addition of the new college and changing the name of the College of Arts and Sciences to the College of Sciences.

SHSU President Jim Gaertner told the regents that now a disproportionately larger percentage of departments and faculty are housed with the College of Arts and Sciences.

“Additionally, in the next few years, the college will be adding programs in nursing, the allied health professions, and possibly engineering,” he said.

“By adding a college, departments and accompanying faculty members will be realigned into newly formed colleges with more homogenous academic content and organizational efficiencies to better serve the needs of our students,” he said.

Selected departments from the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences will be reassigned to create the College of Fine Arts and Mass Communication.

The new College of Fine Arts and Mass Communication will comprise the departments of art, theatre and dance, mass communication and the School of Music.

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences will include the departments of English, foreign languages, family and consumer sciences, history, political science, psychology and philosophy, communication studies, and sociology.

The College of Sciences will include the departments of agricultural and industrial sciences, biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, geography and geology, mathematics and statistics, and physics. Nursing will be added after approval.

In other business the regents approved a $219 million operating budget for SHSU for fiscal year 2011.

“The financial health of Sam Houston State University is excellent,” Gaertner told the regents. “Our enrollment is stable and is estimated to grow by 2 percent during the upcoming fiscal year.

“We will end fiscal year 2010 is very sound financial condition, and the budget for fiscal year 2011 is a foundation for the continued financial growth of Sam Houston State University,” he said.

In business relating to facilities, the regents approved the design development documents for the University Center at The Woodlands, prepared by WHR Architects, Inc. of Houston, and the project budget of $40.5 million.

The 144,164 square foot University Center will be a four-story structure. In addition to classrooms and labs, the facility will included a “one stop” center for providing enrollment, counseling, advising and administrative services, a commons area with pod style food service, informal gathering spaces throughout the building and faculty offices. A parking lot and a five-story parking garage will also be constructed.

In other business, the regents also authorized SHSU to extend the five-year lease-purchase agreement with the City of Huntsville for the Raven Nest Golf Course for an additional five years. The course is used as a laboratory for the Professional Golf Management program under the College of Business Administration.
