SHSU Media Contact: Jennifer Gauntt

An SHSU alumnus and a state representative will address the approximate 1,400 degree candidates expected to be conferred by Sam Houston State University President Dana Gibson during the winter ceremonies on Dec. 17-18.

SHSU distinguished alumnus Bud Haney

Co-founder and president of Profiles International Bud Haney will speak to graduates from the College of Business Administration at 6 p.m. on Friday (Dec. 17).

Texas Rep. Dan Branch will speak at both Saturday (Dec. 18) ceremonies, at 10 a.m. for the colleges of arts and sciences and humanities and social sciences and at 2 p.m. for the colleges of criminal justice and education.

All three ceremonies will be in the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.

A four-time All-American baseball player for SHSU, Haney has been the driving force behind the overseas expansion of Profiles International.

Haney was awarded a baseball scholarship by SHSU, where he earned a degree in accounting.

After a career with the Kansas City Athletics, he established a human resources development business of his own. His success there led to an executive position with an international company, of which he rose to become its president.

In 2004, Haney was honored by his alma mater by being named to the College of Business Adminstration’s “Hall of Fame.” The following year, he was named a “Distinguished Alumnus” by the SHSU Alumni Association.

Haney has also received numerous professional honors by Sales and Marketing Executives International, including being named to their Academy of Achievement Hall of Fame, recognized with their “Pinnacle Award,” and was named a “Certified Emeritus in Marketing” by the group.

A Miller Heiman Strategic Sales certified trainer, Haney is a co-author of the best-selling business guide “40 Strategies for Winning in Business.”

State Rep. Dan Branch

A six-time designate of Capitol Inside’s “Best of the Texas Legislature,” Branch works for higher education as a member of the Texas House of Representatives from Dallas District 108.

Elected in 2002, the Republican legislator represents downtown, uptown and near east Dallas, as well as the town of Highland Park and the city of University Park.

Branch is chairman of the Higher Education Committee and serves on the Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence Committee and the Legislative Budget Board. This session, Branch was selected by Texas House members from 11 north Texas counties to co-chair the Dallas Area Legislative Delegation.

Branch has been the recipient of many public service awards, including the Dallas Morning News “Legislative Leader Board,” the Texas Medical Association Medical Student Division’s “2007 Legislator of the Year," the United States Humane Society’s “Humane State Legislator Award” and is a multiple “Champion of Free Enterprise” award recipient from the Texas Association of Business.

This session, Branch led efforts to develop more Tier One universities in Texas, reform the Top 10 percent college admissions law, limit cell phone use in active school zones and provide more interactive technology in public school classrooms.

In addition to his service in the legislature, Branch is a corporate lawyer and shareholder of Winstead PC. He is a member of the bars of Texas, New York and the District of Columbia.

A graduate of the Southern Methodist University School of Law and the Institute on Comparative Political and Economic Systems at Georgetown University, he holds two undergraduate degrees from Oklahoma Christian University, graduating summa cum laude in 1980.
