Faculty, Staff Volunteers Recognized For Successful Campaign

Volunteers for the Sam Houston State University Faculty/Staff Annual Fund Campaign were applauded for their efforts during a recognition luncheon held Feb. 8 in the Peabody Library.
During the active phase of the campaign, which ran from mid-October through Dec. 31, 2010, a total of 1,284 donors gave or pledged over $233,000. The campaign will continue through the end of August.
SHSU President Dana Gibson recognized the campaign volunteers, during which awards were presented to divisions that had 100 percent participation, the one with the highest participation increase, and the one that raised the highest amount of money.
Gibson commended the committee for their efforts in maintaining an extremely high giving rate over the past few years.
“The results of your hard work make it easier for me when I talk to the legislature about funding, because I’m able to demonstrate the commitment of our faculty and staff to supporting Sam Houston State University with their own money,” she said.
“Over the past 10 years, our outstanding employees have given more that $1.9 million which has benefited a broad range of programs and projects across our campus,” she said.
The first Faculty/Staff Campaign was held in fiscal year 2000-01 and generated $62,680 with an 18.7 percent participation rate.
“When we started working with a volunteer committee in fiscal year 2003-04, the participation rate increased to 37.6 percent, and we raised $121,000,” said Cindy Truax, SHSU director of annual giving and coordinator of the campaign.
“Over the past few years, we have increased participation to the 78 to 80 percent range, and we raised over $288,000 last year,” she said.
Jim Bexley, campaign general chairman, announced some of the figures.
“We had five areas reach 100 percent participation in giving and an additional four areas reached over 90 percent participation,” he said.
“We now have over 418 employees on payroll deduction which is 33 percent of the donors,” he said. “In addition, many people increased their monthly giving. In dollars, it is over $8,000 per month.”
Sherry Henke, campaign staff chair, and Rosanne Keathley, campaign faculty chair, joined Bexley in handing out the awards.
Units with 100 percent participation included College of Business Administration, Student Services, Newton Gresham Library, the College of Education, and University Advancement.
The unit with the highest participation increase over the previous year, going from 83 percent to 92 percent participation, was Enrollment Management.
The College of Arts and Sciences was recognized as the division with the most dollars raised—over $72,000.

The College of Arts and Sciences campaign committee was chaired by Dwayne Pavelock, with members David Burris, Becky Finley, Jessica Gillette, Joe Kirk, Maureen McIntyre, Andy Noble, Gwen Penny, Julie Schwab, John Strait, Darren Williams and Justin Williams.
The College of Business Administration committee was chaired by Bill Green, with members Joe Kavanaugh, Jan Morris, Carol Shaw and Laura Sullivan.
The College of Criminal Justice committee was chaired by Amanda Burris, with members Ann Broussard, Nancy Durham and Kate Fox.
The College of Education committee was chaired by Jenny Estrada, with members Debbie Allen, Wally Barnes, Randi Clower, Susan Hayes, Sherry Hirsch, Daphne Johnson, Fred Lunenburg, Matt Wagner and Ryan Zapalac.
The College of Humanities and Social Sciences committee was chaired by Terry Thibodeaux, with members Jeff Anastasi, Debra Andrist, Rosanne Barker, Tracy Bilsing, Ty Cashion, Brenda Lowery, Lee Miller, Janis White and Mike Yawn.
The Academic Affairs committee was chaired by Dorothy Roberson, with members Cathi Gillette and Keri Rogers.
The Enrollment Management committee was chaired by Valerie Sparkman, with members Patsy Collins, Paige Loft and Becky Martin.
The Finance and Operations committee was co-chaired by Stephanie Brim and Glenn Green, with members Cynthia Bennett, Bob Chapa, Ivanette Lofton, Kevin Morris, Lori Proctor, Sheri St. Clair and Michele Thorn.
The Newton Gresham Library committee was chaired by Cheryl Spencer, with member Marsha Dickens.
The President's Office committee was chaired by Kathy Gilcrease, with member David Paitson.
The Student Services committee was chaired by Leah Mulligan, with members Cindy Allbright and Kari Zella.
