World Political Analyst To Serve As Distinguished Lecturer

John G. Stoessinger

John G. Stoessinger, an internationally recognized political analyst and prize-winning author of ten leading books on world relations, has been selected as the speaker for Sam Houston State University’s 2011 Faculty Distinguished Lecturer Series.

Stoessinger will discuss “The United States and the Coming Struggle for Global Dominance” on Thursday, March 24, at 2 p.m. in the Ron Mafrige Auditorium of the Smith-Hutson Business Building.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

Stoessinger currently serves as Distinguished Professor of Global Diplomacy at the University of San Diego. He holds a doctorate from Harvard and has taught there as well as M.I.T., Columbia, Princeton, the City University of New York, and Trinity University in San Antonio.

Just prior to the beginning of World War II, Stoessinger fled from Nazi-occupied Austria to Czechoslovakia. Three years later, he went to China where he lived for seven years. In Shanghai, he served with the International Refugee Organization.

Stoessinger was the acting director of the Political Affairs Division at the United Nations from 1967 to 1974. He is currently a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and lectures extensively throughout the world.

Stoessinger’s most current book, “Why Nations Go To War,” was published in its eleventh edition in 2010. He is also the author of “The Might of Nations: World Politics In Our Time,” which was awarded the Bancroft Prize by Columbia University in 1963 and is now in its tenth edition.

Among his other books are “The Refugee and the World Community;” “Financing the United Nations System;” “The United Nations and the Superpowers;” “Nations at Dawn: China, Russia and America;” “Crusaders and Pragmatists: Movers of Modern American Foreign Policy;” and “Henry Kissinger: The Anguish of Power.”

Stoessinger is the recipient of numerous honors and awards including honorary degrees of Doctor of Laws from Grinnell College and the American College in Switzerland and an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Drury University.

His name is also included in Marquis’s “Who’s Who in America” and “Who’s Who in the World” in their most recent editions.
