Regents Approve Programs, Projects, Promotions At SHSU

SAN MARCOS — The Texas State University System Board of Regents — Sam Houston State University’s governing body — approved degree and graduate certificate program additions and a six-year capital improvement program at its quarterly meeting Friday.

The regents met on the campus of Texas State University-San Marcos.

The new degree programs include the Bachelor of General Studies degree in the College of Sciences; the Master of Science degree with a major in project management within the College of Business Administration; the Bachelor of Science degree with a major in victim studies within the College of Criminal Justice; and the Master of Fine Arts degree with a major in creative writing, publishing and editing within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

The new graduate certificate programs include applied geographic information systems within the College of Sciences; digital literacies within the College of Education; developmental reading within the College of Education; and dyslexia within the College of Education.

The regents also approved changing the title of the Master of Education degree with a major in reading to the Master of Education degree with a major in reading/language arts.

The programs will be implemented upon final approval by the TSUS Board of Regents and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

The regents also approved the six-year capital improvement plan submitted by SHSU. Projects within the program are typically funded from a variety of sources, including tuition revenue bonds; the Higher Education Assistance Fund; auxiliary or unexpended funds; Texas State University System bonds; gifts; and grants.

Most of the projects in this year’s six-year plan have either been initiated since the last annual review of the CIP or are being carried forward from last year’s submission.

Among the new SHSU projects proposed for inclusion are the construction of an athletic office complex; a parking structure at Bobby K. Marks Drive and Bowers Boulevard; a soccer/track/tennis complex; and a South Dining Commons. Also included are the demolition of Smith-Kirkley Hall and the buildings on Sorority Hill.

In other business, the regents approved changing the name of the Northside Dining Facility to Old Main Market upon completion. The new dining facility is located approximately one block north of the previous site of the Old Main building, which burned in 1982.

The regents also authorized SHSU to name the agricultural engineering technology center the William R. Harrell Agricultural Engineering Technology Center in memory of Dr. Billy Harrell, who served in a number of leadership capacities in the university’s Department of Agricultural and Industrial Sciences for 37 years.

In personnel business, 28 faculty were promoted to associate professor, effective Sept. 1. They include Jeffrey Anastasi, psychology and philosophy; Rebecca Bustamante, educational leadership and counseling; Beth Cory, mathematics and statistics; Thomas Cox, history; Jeffrey Crane, history; Brian Domitrovic, history; Shirin Edwin, foreign languages; Rebecca Finley, art; Andrea Foster, curriculum and instruction; Yvonne Garza, educational leadership and counseling; Gang Gong, geography and geology; Fidel Gonzalez, economics and international business; and Darren Grant, economics and international business.

Also, Kurt Jesswein, general business and finance; Dustin Jones, mathematics and statistics; Michael Lau, agricultural and industrial sciences; Jeffrey Littlejohn, history; Eric Marsh, theatre; Lee Miller, sociology; Judith Nelson, educational leadership and counseling; Javier Pinell, music; Thomas Prior, theatre; April Shemak, English; Laura Sullivan, general business and finance; Paula Tripp, family and consumer sciences; Janis White, family and consumer sciences; Pamela Zelbst, management and marketing; and Shuangyue Zhang, communication studies.

Those receiving promotion to full professor, effective Sept. 1, are Frances Brandau-Brown, communication studies; Jerry Cook, biological sciences; Tamara Cook, biological sciences; Gerry Hynes, general business and finance; Renee James, physics; Rosanne Keathley, health and kinesiology; Mary Nichter, educational leadership and counseling; and Robert Stretcher, general business and finance.
