Alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students are invited to join the Sam Houston State University Alumni Association in celebrating the life of Texas’s greatest hero and the university’s namesake, Gen. Sam Houston.
The celebration will take place on March 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin, featuring remarks by SHSU President Dana Gibson and others.
Hors d’ouervres and a birthday cake will be served.
That morning, the Alumni Association’s Board of Directors will gather at the Capitol where they will distribute replicas of Sam Houston’s cane to legislators with an invitation to the birthday celebration attached.
One of the most colorful figures of 19th Century America, Sam Houston served as president of the Republic of Texas, governor of the State of Texas, governor of Tennessee, U.S. senator, and Tennessee congressman.
He led the Texas Army in the Battle of San Jacinto - the decisive victory of the Texas Revolution, which cleared the way for Texas to become a part of the United States. A memorial museum, a U.S. Army base, a national forest, a historical park, and a university have all been named in his honor.
Lodging accommodations can be made at the DoubleTree Guest Suites Austin, 303 W. 15th Street, Austin, Texas, by calling 800.222.8733 and providing the group code: SAM.
