SHSU To 'Put On Their Boots' For Military Campaign

In the spirit of “Peace, Love, and Bearkats” Sam Houston State University will officially recognize and support the Boot Campaign initiative during this year’s Homecoming celebration on Oct. 15.

The Boot Campaign is a grassroots initiative that “provides an easy and tangible way for Americans to show appreciation for troops (both past and present), raise awareness of the challenges they face upon return and donate funds to charities supporting their transition home.”

Through the campaign, participants purchase and wear combat boots, the proceeds from which are donated to partner charities that assist returning veterans and active troops dealing with emotional, mental and physical issues.

During the Homecoming game, special surprise activities are planned that will raise awareness of this campaign, according to Lt. Col. David Yebra, chair of SHSU’s military science department.

Attendees are asked to literally “put on their boots” for the SHSU versus Nichols State game and purchase items from the Boot Campaign website, at www.bootcampaign.com.

“Your support of the Boot Campaign goes a long way to show our veterans that we’ll never forget what they do for us,” Yebra said. “I love the support and patriotism here at SHSU and the surrounding community, especially after three tours in combat. I would be proud to see as many people as possible represent all service members and express our deepest gratitude for your support by wearing their combat boots that day.”

Among the partner charities supported by the Boot Campaign is the Lone Survivor Foundation, which has currently received more than $70,000 from the campaign, according to the Boot Campaign’s website.

The Lone Survivor Foundation was founded by SHSU Distinguished Alumnus and Navy SEAL (Ret.) Marcus Luttrell.

The foundation “welcomes home, empowers and restores America’s wounded heroes and their families” and facilitates special experiences for wounded soldiers throughout the country, including travel to military funerals, hunting expeditions and a military marriage retreat.

The foundation currently is raising funds to build a wellness retreat in East Texas that will be located on 1,000-plus acres of Texas ranch land and will encompass physical and emotional wellness activities for the wounded soldier and his/her family, according to the LSF.

Members of the SHSU family who would like to participate in the Boot Campaign and ensure their order benefits the Lone Survivor Foundation can do so by selecting “Sam Houston State University” from the pulldown menu under “how did you hear about us” when checking out online.

“For those who want to order for the Homecoming game, sooner is better due to shipping time for boots,” Yebra said.

“Although we are using the Homecoming game as a day to show your support by getting your boots on, the effort doesn’t end there,” he said. “The SHSU Boot Campaign will continue as does the efforts of all our veterans and all those that serve. As the saying goes…When They Come Back, We Give Back.”

As always, all Bearkat football fans are also invited to participate in the ROTC tailgating activities, which include food, giveaways and the rock-climbing wall, Yebra said.

For those who order boots but do not receive them before homecoming, other activities have been planned throughout the year that will also support the campaign.
