Harlem GlobetrottersThe world-famous Harlem Globetrotters are promising “4 Times the Fun” at Sam Houston State University when they bring their latest novelty—the 4-point shot—to the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum on Jan. 31.

The Globetrotters, known for contributing more innovations to the game of basketball than any other team in history, will hit the court against the Washington Generals at 7 p.m.

“The Globetrotters have been at the forefront of basketball’s evolution throughout the sport’s history,” said Globetrotters CEO Kurt Schneider. “From the alley-oop to the slam dunk to the behind-the-back pass, the Globetrotters have long brought innovations to basketball that are now staples of the game, and we’re confident the 4-point shot will change the game of basketball going forward.”

Implemented as part of their 2011 “4 Times the Fun” North American tour, the first-ever 4-point shot is featured at two designated spots on each side of midcourt, each located 35 feet from the basket, or 12 feet beyond the NBA’s official 3-point line.

Debuted to a national audience on Dec. 5 during a special ESPN2 telecast, the 4-point option is expected to further open up the playing floor for the Globetrotters as well as their opponents, the Generals, and generate even more high-scoring action and competitive play, according to Schneider.

Globetrotter Dizzy Grant drilled the first official 35-footer in the closing seconds of the first quarter during the Dec. 5 event, held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Disney World in Orlando, Fla. Three other Globetrotters also successfully hit the groundbreaking shot on the night: Special K Daley, Ant Atkinson and Firefly Fisher.

Now in its record 85th season of touring, the Harlem Globetrotters have played more than 25,000 games and entertained everyone from presidents to Popes.

The team, whose players range from 5’8” to 6’9,” includes two players from Texas. Bull Bullard (No. 33) is a 2008 Texas A&M University—Corpus Christi alumnus, and Hot Shot Branch (No. 9) is a 1995 Baylor University alumnus.

Tickets, starting at $20, are on sale at www.harlemglobetrotters.com, the Johnson Coliseum Box Office, ticketweb.com, SHSU Recreational Sports Center Suite 162 or by phone at 936.294.3021.
