The Sam Houston Memorial Museum will present “Griff Smith’s TEXAS: A Retrospective Through the Lens and Images from Texas Highways,” a display of Lone Star photographic moments, from March 5 to June 30 in the exhibition gallery at the Katy and E. Don Walker, Sr., Education Center.

The new exhibit journeys through 25 years that J. Griffis Smith has served as the photography editor for Texas Highways magazine.

Fifty photos taken by Griff were selected that capture the history, diversity and uniqueness of the state of Texas. The exhibit is a display of Smith’s talents and Texas Highways contribution to tourism, as well as the process of concept to publication, according to Megan Buro, museum marketing coordinator

“This exhibit is unique in that not only is it made up of photos by Griff, but that it is two dimensional,” said Buro. “Included in the exhibit are short videos narrated by Griff. In the videos, Griff explains the techniques he uses to accomplish the end results of the photos we see in Texas Highways.”

An opening reception will be held in the education center’s auditorium on March 5 from 4-6 p.m.

“Mr. Smith will give a presentation in the auditorium, which will be followed by the grand opening of the exhibit,” said Buro. “There will be light refreshments available to the public and Smith will be on hand to visit with guests.”

Mac Woodward and Casey Roon, curators for exhibit, were inspired to create this exhibit from past experiences with Griff and Texas Highways, according to Buro.

“Texas Highways is the premier travel magazine in Texas, and their efforts and Griff’s work in promoting Texas inspired Mac and Casey to do something that would highlight Griff and Texas Highways,” said Buro. “Photos can speak a thousand words, and Griff’s work in Texas Highways has helped to market Texas and encourage the exploration of the Lone Star State.”

The exhibit is supported by contributions from Texas Highway magazine, the Texas Department of Transportation and the Canon Corporation.

The exhibit is free to the public, though donations will be accepted.

The Walker Education Center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4:30 p.m.
