Third Legends Festival To Feature Cary Grant

The Political Science Junior Fellows will provide community members with an evening of dinner and a movie, as well as a lecture, during their third annual “Legends of Hollywood” Film Festival on Saturday (Nov. 5) at The Wynne Home Arts Center.

The festival will feature the films of Cary Grant, food offerings from around the world, and a lecture by Carl Rollyson, an expert on the Golden Age of Hollywood.

“This is one of our most popular events,” said junior fellows co-president Robert Loughran. “It’s a great way to relax after a long week at work or school, it’s educational, and, most important, it’s fun.”

This year’s films feature Cary Grant in his early prime, showing off his talent in screwball comedies, according to Loughran.

“The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer,” released in 1947, stars Grant, Shirley Temple, Myrna Loy, and Rudy Vallee and highlights the comic antics that result from Temple’s school-girl crush on Grant.

“The Awful Truth,” released in 1937, stars Grant, Irene Dunn, and Ralph Bellamy and, according to the New York Times, delivers a “terrific comic impact.” The film was selected by the American Film Institute as one of the 100 greatest comedies of all time.

Rollyson, who has written biographies of Grant’s co-stars and contemporaries Marilyn Monroe and Dana Andrews and is the editor of the Hollywood Legends series at the University of Mississippi Press, will discuss Grant’s career and the impact of screwball comedies in the 1930s and 1940s.

The festival will kick off with a “meet and greet” at 5 p.m., followed by “The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer.” From 7-8 p.m. a dinner from Grant’s native England, as well as other multi-cultural offerings, will be served, and following dinner, “The Awful Truth” will be screened.

The “Legends of Hollywood” festival was initiated in 2009, the centenary of home-town star Dana Andrews. Last year, the festival featured the work of Marilyn Monroe.

Tickets cost $20, which includes admittance to one film, dinner, and the presentation by Rollyson. Seating is limited.
