Event To Encourage SHSU To ‘Ride For Your Life’
Two professors in SHSU’s health and kinesiology department are giving students, faculty and staff the opportunity to “be a part of something larger than life, in support of your life.”
As part of the “Ride for your Life” event, participants from across campus will join together to collectively ride 280,000 miles between May 16, which begins National Bike Week, and Oct. 2, which is Livestrong Day.
The 280,000 miles represent the 28 million cancer survivors around the world, according to assistant professor Jennifer Didier, who is coordinating the event with assistant professor Page Glave.
“You can ride a few minutes at a time (five minutes equals one mile), or 28 miles at a time,” Didier said. “You can ride with your family, in a gym, in a spin class, on a mountain bike, etc. We have designed this so that families can ride and be a part of such an incredible event, as can seasoned cyclists who may ride 1,000 miles before Oct. 2.
“The Department of Recreational Sports is supporting us by allowing participants to attend their spin classes, and we will also have a designated bike in the main fitness area for people to 'ride their miles,’” she said.
Participants who pre-register by May 16 will receive a $10 discount by entering "Bearkat" in the coupon box on the registration form and/or online.
Registration is $28, or $18 for early registration, which is available online at http://rideforyourlife.webs.com. Donations will also be accepted in honor or memory of a loved one.
Participants can sign up individually, or as a team or organization.
“This event is the perfect opportunity to help motivate everyone to move a little more, and be part of team, achieving a bigger goal,” Glave said. “You may want to skip your workout, but then you think of how you are helping others, and you get motivated.
“To say you helped reach the goal of 280,000 miles and helped empower cancer survivors along the way is very meaningful,” she said.

Theatre To Cast ‘Doubt’ In Showcase Theatre
The Sam Houston State University theatre department will present John Patrick Shanley’s 2005 Pulitzer Prize-winning drama “Doubt” Wednesday through Saturday (May 4-7).
Show times are at 8 p.m. each day, with a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee, in the University Theatre Center’s Showcase Theatre.
“Doubt” tells the story of Sister Aloysius, a Bronx school principal, who takes matters into her own hands when she suspects the young Father Flynn of improper relations with one of the male students. The play focuses on the perception of truth and how opinions are influenced by circumstance.
The play stars musical theatre majors Jonathan Teverbaugh as Father Flynn and Teresa Zimmermann as Sister Aloyius.
The cast also includes SHSU theatre majors Whitney Coulter and Nyseli Vega.
“Doubt” is directed by SHSU theatre faculty Larry Smiglewski and assistant directed by theatre staff member April Keith.
SHSU theatre education major Heather Limmer is the stage manager and designers include theatre faculty member Eric Marsh (sound), theatre staff member Craig Brossman (scenery), senior theatre major Amy Brock (costumes), and junior theatre major Jeff Linquist (lighting).
Tickets are $10 for general admission. Group rates are available.
“Doubt” contains adult content; therefore, children under the age of three will not be admitted.

Exhibit To Feature Graduating Senior Works
Senior artists who will receive their degrees during the spring commencement exercises will present the culmination of their works at Sam Houston State University during the Graduating Senior Exhibition May 9-13 in the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery.
The exhibit will include works by 27 students graduating with Bachelor of Fine Art degrees in studio art, photography, and computer animation.
The commencement ceremony for the BFA candidates will begin at 2:30 p.m. on May 14. A reception for the art students and their exhibition will be held in the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery immediately following the ceremony.
Both the exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.
The Gaddis Geeslin Gallery is open Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m.

Program To Provide An ‘Expanded View’ Of Universe
The SHSU physics department will give audiences two final “Expanded Views” of the universe for the spring semester on Friday (May 13) and May 20.
“Expanded View,” which begins at 7 p.m. in Farrington Building Room 102 on both days, will explore “some of the most beautiful deep space objects through the eyes of the Hubble, Spitzer and Chandra space telescopes,” according to Michael Prokosch, physics department staff laboratory assistant.
The planetarium series program will also point out which constellations attendees can expect to see in the upcoming months, including Leo, Virgo, Ursa Major and Gemini, as well as the planet Saturn, Prokosch said.
Admission is free.
The planetarium seats up to 29 visitors and includes a dome that is approximately 18 feet in diameter and more than 20 feet high in the center.

CJ To Host Summer Learning Opportunities For Teachers
The College of Criminal Justice will help prepare educators teaching in the field through a crime scene investigation training course this summer.
The Advanced Crime Scene Investigations course, for high school teachers, will be held June 20-24 at the George J. Beto Criminal Justice Center.
The one-week course, held in conjunction with the Southeast Texas Applied Forensic Science Facility, will focus on photography, CSI processing, entomology and human decomposition, forensic anthropology, and human skeletal recovery and documentation.
It will be led by Sybil Bucheli, SHSU faculty member and forensic entomologist; Chris Duncan, Houston Police Department photographer; and Joan Bytheway, SHSU faculty member and forensic anthropologist.
Registration is $650, and the deadline is May 20. Space is limited to 25 attendees.
Participants will receive 40 TCLEOSE credits.
