Monthly Testing of New Emergency Notification Component To Begin Next Week

Sam Houston State University will begin monthly testing of a new siren/loud speaker system on Monday and Tuesday (April 4-5).

The test of the emergency notification system will include a series of siren sounds and public address announcements.

The system consists of 10 strategically placed sirens and speakers that will be used to warn the university community in the event of a life-threatening emergency. The activation will consist of an alert tone and a voice message with instructions.

Those who are indoors during the activation may not hear the sirens or voice messages over the speakers. If the siren system is used during an actual emergency, SHSU will continue to relay critical information using the most appropriate options from a full range of notification resources, such as website announcements, social media, e-mail, an automated message line, KatSafe, and the local newspaper and radio stations. The manner of notification will depend on the nature of the emergency.

Future siren system tests, which will occur on the first Monday and Tuesday of each month, will be advertised on the SHSU website. When the system is activated for a test, no action is necessary and there is no need to seek shelter.

As a reminder, it is crucial that SHSU be able to contact faculty, staff and students if there is an emergency on campus. To do this, current contact information must be in the KatSafe system. More information about updating KatSafe information, including how to receive text messages, can be found online in the Information Resources February newsletter.
