Alumnae Share Honors As Top Student Teachers

Two alumnae from Sam Houston State University’s College of Education have been singled out for their performances in the classroom as student teachers by the Consortium of State Organizations for Texas Teacher Education.

Maegan Admire and Martina Dozier were recognized on Oct. 25 as two of the state’s three “Texas Student Teachers of the Year" for 2010-2011. This is the first time two SHSU students have been recognized for their performances, according to COE Dean Genevieve Brown.

“The faculty and staff of the College of Education are delighted to join our colleagues in recognizing these talented graduates as outstanding new teachers,” Brown said. “Their skillful practice and dedication to students provides a great example to all educators.”

The award recognizes a student teacher who has demonstrated during the student teaching experience an outstanding ability to plan and develop a repertoire of classroom management skills and instructional strategies that support the needs and curriculum of all students; establish effective interpersonal relationships with students, parents, faculty and staff; and reflect about the teaching and learning process.

“My life experiences have helped me to relate to all my students…I hope to be someone they can talk to and depend on,” said Admire, a fall 2010 graduate who completed her student teaching with the Magnolia school district. Her mentor teachers were Pam Fontenot, at Williams Elementary, and Peyton Smith, at Bear Branch Elementary.

“(Admire) was outstanding in the classroom, not only in the teaching strategies that she used, but also in her interaction with the students,” said SHSU supervisor Jackye Cannon, who recommended her for the award. “She strived to help students achieve their best and instilled in them a ‘love for learning.’”

Dozier, a spring 2011 graduate who completed her student teaching with Montgomery school district, said her desire to work with children “comes from deep within.

“I truly have a passion for teaching and have many strengths and excellent qualities that I will be bringing into the teaching profession,” she said.

Her mentor teachers were Kimber Kehmann, at Montgomery Elementary, and Dusty Norman, at Montgomery Intermediate.

“(Dozier) consistently interacted with the students in a positive, educational learning environment,” said SHSU supervisor Glenda Kennair, who recommended her for the award. “She set high expectations for learning, engaged all students in meaningful and hands on activities, while making learning fun.”

The Texas Student Teachers of the Year award is presented at the Consortium of State Organizations for Texas Teacher Education’s annual conference.
