Sam Houston State University students, faculty, staff and alumni are invited to “return to the rink” on April 14 for the second annual “SHSU Night with the Houston Aeros” at Houston’s Toyota Center.

Beginning at 7:35 p.m., the game will feature a night of “Bearkat spirit” as the hockey team faces off against the San Antonio Rampage.

Before the “puck drop” to start the game, the Bearkat community will be able to participate in a variety of activities that will take place that afternoon.

The day’s events kick off at 4 p.m. when students are invited to play in a game of broomball on the center’s ice arena. To participate, students must wear fully toed shoes and bring a signed waiver available (here) on the event’s website.

SHSU students at Aeros gameBearkats are encouraged to show their school spirit at the event by wearing SHSU apparel. Attendees will also be able to display organizational flags and banners from their respective groups.

There will be several other SHSU themed activities during the game, such as contests, trivia, and giveaways.

In addition, a live radio feed of the event will be available during game time and intermission, featuring interviews from SHSU President Dana Gibson and head football coach Willie Fritz.

Students in the university’s graduate sport management program plan “SHSU Night with the Houston Aeros.” The event is a collaborative project between Brent Estes’ “Sport Finance and Sales” course, Ryan Zapalac’s “Event and Facility Management” class, and the Houston Aeros, according to Zapalac.

“We are pretty optimistic after the great turn out at last year’s event as we had 506 attendees,” Zapalac, an assistant professor of sport management. “We hope our fellow Bearkats come through once again to see all the great additions we have made to the 2012 event.”

The event gives students valuable experience to execute concepts learned in class, he said.

“This project is a tremendous opportunity for the students and we would love for SHSU affiliates to come out and see how hard our students have been working,” said Zapalac.

The event also provides the Bearkat community an opportunity to “have fun in the big city,” according to Justin Humphrey, Houston Aeros sales representative and SHSU sport management alumnus.

“This is such a great opportunity to get the SHSU community more visible in the Houston area, while providing an enjoyable experience to students,” he said.

Pre-sale ticket prices are $10 for upper end zone seating ($16 game-day) and $30 for center ice seating ($42 game-day) exclusively for SHSU affiliates. Discount parking passes are also available for $5.

In addition, a VIP meet-and-greet will be held for SHSU student organizational leaders, faculty, staff, alumni and friends at 6 p.m. in the Red and White Club at Toyota Center. Gibson and Fritz being the featured guests, and refreshments sponsored by Student Services, as well as a multitude of giveaways and prizes for attendees, will also be available.

Tickets may be purchased online at both the Aeros website and http://sportmanagement.shsu.edu with the promotional codes “SHSU,” “KATS,” “SAM” or “HOUSTON” (all provide the same discount) or by phone at 713.361.7947.
