Career Services will highlight the importance of lifelong career development and personal empowerment with a series of events as part of National Career Development Week beginning Tuesday (Nov. 13).

That day, seven area and campus speakers will come together to share stories of how they started their careers, what major they chose and how their interest and experiences played a part in their decision, as well as what or who may have influenced their career paths, as part of a panel presentation, from 9:30-11 a.m. and again from 12:30-2 p.m. in Lowman Student Center Room 315.

Held in conjunction with the University 1301 classes, but open to the public, the sessions will bring together an assistant deputy director with Montgomery County Probation; financial adviser with Ameriprise Financial; an SHSU chemistry professor; advocacy coordinator with SAAFE House; the SHSU Alcohol and Drug Abuse Initiative Program coordinator; the vocational rehabilitation counselor with Department of Veterans Affairs; an auditor with The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts; and a retired foreign service officer with U.S. Department of State and current director of Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Program.

On Wednesday (Nov. 14) a second panel will also discuss how those topics are relevant to their lives in two additional sessions, from 10-11 a.m. and again from noon to 1 p.m. in LSC 315.

That panel includes the SHSU Dean of Students; a career counselor with University of Houston Clear Lake; director of administration, anesthesiology, and critical care with MD Anderson Cancer Center; a retired agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms; game warden and recruiter with Texas Parks and Wildlife; an SHSU chemistry professor; and an adult protective services specialist with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.

In addition, Career Services is hosting a weekly “Discover Your Future Career Exploration Group” on Wednesdays from 1-2:30 p.m. that will continue through the end of November.

“This group is targeted for freshmen and sophomores but is open to all who are in need,” said Cenaiyda Carranza, career counselor for Career Services. “Our graduate assistant Brittany Kilpatrick is facilitating this group and is eager to meet with students to discuss choosing a major, resume tips and interviewing techniques, as well to increase student marketability in the workforce.”

Other events include “Walk-In” days at Career Services, on Wednesdays, and a lecture on “Managing the Maze of the Federal Job Search” on Nov. 27 in conjunction with the College of Criminal Justice’s “Real Talk with CJ” program.

“The goal for our SHSU campus during the week is to reach as many students as we can who are unsure in their selection of major and/or may be unsure of a career path,” Carranza said.

“By inviting professionals from various fields to share their stories about their career paths and what it may have taken to reach those career goals, we are hoping to increase the level of student awareness in examining their own lives, careers, and the alternatives available to increase personal success and happiness,” she said.
