Following last year’s championship season, expectations are high for the 2012 Bearkat football team, which is topping many preseason polls for the Football Championship Subdivision.
Bearkat fans who want to join in the excitement but may not understand the rules of football can learn the “X’s and O’s” of the game from the professionals during the sixth annual State Farm Football 101: Chalk Talk for Women on Aug. 7.
The clinic will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Ron Randleman Strength and Fitness Center, located next to Don Sanders Stadium.
Participants will learn the different responsibilities of the offense, defense and special teams; have an opportunity to run out on the field just like the football team does on game day; and obtain instruction from coaches on throwing, catching and other elements of the game, as well as meet some of the Bearkat football players.
Big 12 Conference referee Joel Wetzel joined SHSU's football coaching staff last year to explain some of the rules to fans who wanted to get a better understanding of the game. |
Head football coach Willie Fritz, who will lead the clinic along with other members of the SHSU coaching staff, said they are anticipating a large group of ladies who are as excited about the upcoming football year as the staff and players are.
“We’ve had some really good crowds the last couple of years, and we hope that continues this year,” he said. “We were thinking last year about maybe skipping a year and doing it every other season, but we had such a strong response that we’re going to make it an annual affair. Everyone had such a good time.
“We try to keep it reasonably priced so that as many people can attend as possible. Each year we try to do it a little differently so that ladies who attend each season will learn something different,” Fritz said. “One of the things we’re doing a little bit differently this year is we’re going to talk about when to cheer, when to be loud, and when not to be loud.”
In addition to the football lessons from the SHSU coaching staff, Chalk Talk will include a tour of the facilities, hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar.
The event is a partnership with State Farm designed to teach women the basics of the game of football in a fun, social environment.
Registration is $20 per person or $140 for a table of eight. On the day of the event, a single registration is $25.
As the defending Southland Conference champions and NCAA runners up, the SHSU football team includes 18 returning starters, including the Southland Conference Player-of-the-Year, Offensive Player-of-the-Year, and Defensive Player-of-the-Year; 7 All-Americans; and the FCS National Coach-of-the-Year.
Ticket sales for the football season have been going extremely well, with the addition of new chair-back seats in the reserved section of Bowers Stadium, and season tickets are much higher at this point than they’ve ever been before, Fritz said.
