SHSU Named 'A Great College To Work For' For Third Time

Sam Houston State University has once again been named “A Great College To Work For,” according to a new survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education.

SHSU has made the list as one of the best colleges in the nation to work for three consecutive years.

The results, released Friday (Aug. 10) in The Chronicle’s fifth annual report on The Academic Workplace, are based on a survey of approximately 47,000 employees at 294 colleges and universities.

Only 103 institutions achieved “Great College To Work For” recognition for specific best practices and policies. Results are reported for small, medium and large institutions with SHSU included among the large universities with 10,000 or more students.

Sam Houston State was recognized in five categories this year:

• Facilities, workspace and security
• Job satisfaction
• Work/life balance
• Supervisor/department chair relationship
• Respect and appreciation

SHSU is also among the 42 institutions named to The Chronicle’s “Honor Roll” for receiving high marks in multiple categories.

“We place a tremendous amount of importance on creating an atmosphere in which our faculty and staff feel they can succeed,” said SHSU President Dana Gibson. “This, in turn, helps us provide a nurturing and fulfilling learning environment for our students and contributes to Sam Houston State University being a great name in education.”

Security was one of the categories that received positive comments from SHSU employees. University Police Chief Kevin Morris said his department has made some changes that may have contributed to the confidence employees have in workplace safety.

“We have become more proactive and engaged with the campus community in their programs and activities,” he said. “Also, we have received much support from the university’s administration, and this has translated to higher morale, job satisfaction, and a higher retention of police officers.”

Employees also gave SHSU high marks in work/life balance. One example that has been noted through the years is the President’s Employee Scholarship program. The university offers employees the opportunity to complete or advance their education while working at SHSU. Last year, SHSU awarded 114 Presidential Employee Scholarships, in which the cost of tuition was reimbursed once employees completed their course with a grade of “C” or higher.

Employees also ranked the university high in facilities and workspace, reflecting the opinion of two national professional organizations, which earlier this year presented national awards in recognition of the construction of the James and Nancy Gaertner Performing Arts Center, as well as the consistent upkeep and commendable appearance of the university’s grounds.

“The institutions that the ‘Great Colleges’ program recognizes provide innovative educational experiences—while also offering their employees an outstanding workplace—and we are eager to help readers learn more about them,” said Liz McMillen, The Chronicle’s editor.

The survey results are based on a two-part assessment process: an institutional audit that captured demographics and workplace policies from each institution, and a survey administered to faculty, administrators, and professional support staff. The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received recognition was the employee feedback.

To administer the survey and analyze the results, The Chronicle worked with ModernThink, LLC, a strategic human capital consulting firm that has conducted numerous “Best Places to Work” programs, surveying hundreds of thousands of employees nationwide.
