“Fluffy” comedian Gabriel Iglesias will pit stop through Huntsville in the middle of his “Fluffy Shop Tour” to fill the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum with laughter on March 28.
The Sammypalooza comedy event will begin at 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7 p.m.
Iglesias, a 32-year old Long Beach, Calif., native who is known for riffing about his girthy middle, has been described as an unbelievably witty and electrifying performer.
His standup act includes a mixture of storytelling, parodies, characters and sound effects that bring his personal experiences to life.
Iglesias is most noted for his Comedy Central appearances and has recorded two different acts, “Hot and Fluffy” and “I’m Not Fat…I’m Fluffy.” He began his most recent U.S. tour, “The Fluffy Shop Tour,” in the fall.
His television credits include “Last Comic Standing,” "Jimmy Kimmel Live," “Conan,” "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," "Good Morning America," “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson,” FOX TV’s “The Family Guy,” "Showtime at the Apollo" and BET's "Comic View." He also had the unique opportunity to be the special headlining opener at the Amman Jordan Comedy Festival, the first of its kind in the Arab world.
In addition, he is currently working on his own TV project for Comedy Central.
Iglesias’s act will debut a new spring lineup for the Sammypalooza concert series, according to Chuck Collins, assistant director for the Department of Student Activities.
"The opportunity to have Gabriel Iglesias at SHSU is a unique event we want to offer our students,” Collins said. “Through the generosity of the student service fee committee, we're able to bring a more well-known comedian to campus that contributes to campus events and encourages students to participate in campus life.
“From here on out, we will have a fall and spring Sammypalooza concert, with the fall concert always being held in conjunction with Welcome Week,” he said. “The intention right now is to do a concert for the spring and fall; however, if a comedian goes over really well, we might talk about continuing to bring a comedian in the spring.”
Iglesias was selected to come to SHSU by polling students through the Houstonian and SHSU Facebook page, according to Collins.
"I've watched Gabriel Iglesias on Comedy Central, and I think he is hilarious,” said Lauren Preston, senior mass communication major. “I am beyond excited that he is coming to the SHSU campus.”
Because the concert is paid for in part by student services fees, there will be no charge for the event. Tickets will not be given out, and seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
“The students must bring an active Bearkat OneCard with them to Johnson Coliseum to enter the show; there are no exceptions to this,” Collins said. “As an added bonus, students are encouraged to invite alumni to this event, as a single, current Bearkat OneCard can admit an additional 10 alumni and friends.”
