SHSU, Huntsville To �Ignite The Night,� Raise Assault Awareness

The Bearkat and Huntsville communities will rally in support of the survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence by “igniting” the night on Wednesday (April 18).

SHSU President Dana Gibson and Walker County Judge Danny Pierce will speak during the inaugural event, which will be from 6-9 p.m. in the Old Main Pit.

“Ignite the Night” is designed to promote awareness about and honor survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence on campus and in the broader Huntsville community, according to Donielle Miller, coordinator for Student Activities’ Multicultural Student Services.

“Statistics indicate that someone is sexually assaulted in the United States every two minutes, and yet, sexual assault is one of the most under-reported crimes,” she said. “Therefore, our goal in hosting this event is to give a voice to all of those that have been impacted in some way by sexual assault and domestic violence.”

Activities scheduled to “Ignite the Night” include speakers, poetry readings, a survivor’s story, music, and a step performance by the Zeta Phi Beta sorority, followed by a march down University Avenue to the Walker County courthouse. Once at the courthouse, another short rally will be held including refreshments, speakers, and a candle light vigil, after which city and county officials will read a proclamation.

During the rally on campus, tables will be set up around the Old Main Pit to allow the donation of toiletries for the SAAFE House, to buy T-shirts and wristbands, and to distribute candles. Free pizza will be available for attendees, who can register to win door prizes.

In the week leading up to “Ignite the Night, student groups such as Alpha Chi Omega Sorority and the Crime Victim Services Alliance sell “Ignite the Night” T-shirts, wrist bands and ribbons, as well as distribute information about the event, sexual assault and domestic violence, in the Lowman Student Center Mall Area.

Proceeds from the sales will be donated to SAAFE House and Friends of Counseling Center fund, designated for use to defray the cost of medical examination, medications or other emergency expenses incurred by students who are victims of sexual assault, according to Miller.

In addition, two community promotional events have been planned, during which proceeds benefit “Ignite the Night” if you mention the event. These include Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, which will include 10 percent of its sales all day on Monday (April 16), and 3 Spoons Yogurt, which will donate 25 percent of its sales from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday (April 17).

“Ignite the Night” is sponsored by the SHSU Counseling Center, SHSU Multicultural Student Services, Crime Victim Services Alliance, SAAFE House, Alpha Chi Omega Sorority and the SHSU Health Center.

Community donors include Pizza Hut, Domino’s Pizza, Double Dave’s Pizza, Huntsville Lanes, Buffalo Wild Wings, Fuzzy’s Tacos, 3 Spoons, Farm House, Margarita’s, HEB, Yummy Yummy, Bandera Grill, Modello Footwear and Accessories, Papa John’s Pizza, Dairy Queen, No. 1 Nails and Tangles Hair Salon.
