Presentations To Address Relationships During Week Of Love

As romantics around the world prepare for Valentine’s Day next week, the SHSU Counseling Center will delve into the ins and outs of relationships to help students grow in their connections with both others and themselves through their second Love Week.

The series of events and discussions will begin on Monday (Feb. 13) with a presentation by counseling psychologist Maryam Ilahi on “Healthy Relationships.”

Ilahi will share with participants what constitutes healthy and unhealthy relationships, as well as things that contribute to both, including effective communication, conflict styles, the five languages of love, and boundary setting.

The presentation will be held from 4-5 p.m. in Lowman Student Center Room 308.

On Valentine’s Day, executive director for counseling and health services Drew Miller and Lisa Clarkson, from the Student Health Center, will discuss the real relationship between sex and love, options to ensure this part of your relationship is safe and healthy, and will take your questions on the subject.

"The Ins and Outs of Sex and Love" will be from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in LSC Room 308.

The growing popularity of online dating and issues associated with finding a mate utilizing web-based resources will be the topic of Ilahi’s Love Week presentation on Wednesday (Feb. 15), from 4-5 p.m. in LSC Room 308.

“We find that many students don’t know how to go about meeting people to date, because there aren’t a lot of the typical options here in Huntsville,” Miller said. “Students also tell us that because they’re back and forth between Huntsville and home so often, it can make it hard to meet people.

“Finding someone online ends up becoming a really good option for a lot of students.”

On Thursday (Feb. 16), Love Week will wrap up with two presentations on asserting yourself in a relationship and celebrating homosexual relationships.

Led by senior clinical staff member Beth Charrier, "Assert Yourself," will provide students with the tools to express themselves properly and allow them to practice those techniques. The session will be from 4-5 p.m. in LSC Room 308.

“So many students have a hard time really expressing what they want or need out of a situation, particularly face-to-face, and often with their romantic partner. Doing this over text messaging or Facebook is one thing, but that personal discussion is often difficult,” Miller said. "We have a lot of students that come in with relationship difficulties for this very reason.”

Finally, Ilahi will lead a discussion on the positive aspects of queer theory and progress in the acceptance of same-sex relationships in the media, as well as how that impacts mainstream America.

"Celebrating Queer Relationships," which will be held from 5-6 p.m. in LSC Room 304, will also feature a fun trivia game.

“We’re actually excited about offering this presentation this year. It’s the first time we’ve done a session specifically on GLBT issues for Love Week, and given all of the recent related events in the media this felt like a good time to do it,” Miller said. “Our focus at the Counseling Center is to be as inclusive as possible, and this is a segment of our student population that is often overlooked.”
