Gaertner Performing Arts Center Wins Construction Award

WASHINGTON, D.C .— Associated Builders and Contractors has announced that SpawGlass’s work on the Sam Houston State University James and Nancy Gaertner Performing Arts Center project in Huntsville has earned the company a national Pyramid Award in the institutional category of ABC’s Excellence in Construction Awards.

SpawGlass representatives received the award Feb. 22 during the 22nd annual Excellence in Construction Awards celebration at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix.

“This project is an outstanding example of the innovation and commitment to superior craftsmanship that embody merit shop construction,” said Michael D. Bellaman, ABC president and CEO.

This was the second construction award in recent months recognizing SpawGlass's work on the Gaertner Performing Arts Center. In October 2011, the company was presented the ICE Award for the Center by ABC of Greater Houston.  The award is given to the "Best of Houston" project that best represents the industry.

The $38.5 million Performing Arts Center, which opened in Fall 2010, contains a concert hall that seats 800, a state-of-the-art dance theatre that seats 160, and a separate recital hall that seats 175.

The center encompasses more than 100,000 square feet and includes practice studios for theatre, dance and music, faculty offices, set design and building spaces, costume design and wardroom facilities.

It also features seven installations of “public art”—sculpture, mosaics, and murals—especially commissioned for the center, including a hanging sculpture by James Surls, an internationally known artist who is also an alumnus of Sam Houston State.

The Excellence in Construction awards program is the industry’s leading competition, developed to honor innovative and high-quality merit shop construction projects. The award honors all construction team members, including the contractor, owner, architect and engineer.

The winning projects, selected from entries submitted from across the nation, were judged on complexity, attractiveness, unique challenges overcome, completion time, workmanship, innovation, safety and cost.

A panel of industry experts served as the competition’s judges. This year's panel included representatives from the Design-Build Institute of America, Engineering News-Record, the American Institute of Architects, and the National Association of Women in Construction, and representatives from higher education, among others.
